Before you hit the water.... - Russo Insurance Agency

Your perfect day includes the sunrise, a trolling motor and a rubber worm. You love your boat. You even have a name for her. When you're out on the water, the last thing you want to worry about is whether you have the right Boat insurance policy.

We get it.
That's why Farmers developed a specialized policy specifically for you and your boat. And we offer coverage for towing and assistance so you'll never be stranded on the water or the side of the road. Even your trailer.

Double check your line, and don't forget the net. Leave the insurance to us.

A Boat insurance policy through a Farmers agent was specially created for power boats, small sailboats and other vessels. Make sure that your boat has the specialized coverage you just can't get by adding it to your homeowner's policy. For real peace of mind as you're out on the water, you need a policy that provides a wide range of coverage that should include:

  • Physical Damage
  • Increased limits on Liability
  • Medical Payments
  • Uninsured Watercraft
  • Total Loss Replacement Option
  • Personal Property
  • Towing and Assistance
  • Trailer coverage

A Boat insurance policy through Farmers will cover a wide range of boats - sail and power, inboard, outboard, inboard-outdrive and jet drive. Just about any make or model of boat can be covered under this program. Check out images and descriptions of different?boats we cover.

For extra coverage on the water, and because not everyone's wants are the same, a Boat insurance policy through Farmers offers a variety of options, such as:

  • Agreed Value Hull Coverage. Farmers will cover your boat for an agreed amount. That means we will pay the amount of insurance if you have a total loss. This gives you an added measure of protection.
  • Optional Actual Cash Value Hull Coverage. If you'd prefer a 10% reduction in your hull premium, Farmers can settle losses on an actual cash value basis. You choose the coverage you want and the premium option that works for you.
  • Total Loss Settlement Endorsement.?Will pay up to 20% more than the amount of insurance to replace a covered watercraft. And it only costs $10! The endorsement must be added to the policy no later than one year after the watercraft's model year. Eligibility continues during the five years following the model year, provided it is successively renewed with the policy.

Farmers offers a variety of discounts that can save you money on your premium, and there's no limit to the number of discounts you can receive if you qualify. With a Farmers policy, you may be eligible for the following discounts:

  • Multi-Unit
  • Renewal discount for maintaining continuous coverage
  • Boating Safety Course
  • Safety Equipment
  • Multi-Policy

Higher deductibles can help lower the cost of your premium. Flexible payment plans, including automatic funds transfer, help you keep your monthly budgeting on track. Together they can help you keep your premium payments affordable.

Boat insurance from Farmers is only available in the United States in all states except Florida. Coverage is also available in the District of Columbia. Please note that boat coverages and boat coverage amounts vary by state. All coverages may not be available in all areas.

Boating enthusiasts know how important it is to have coverages beyond the standards offered by many companies, or by a rider on a homeowner's policy. In fact, many people think their boat is completely covered under their homeowner's policy until they have a loss.

Customers who own power boats, fishing boats, pontoon boats, small sailboats, older and lower-valued boats and other vessels 26 feet and less in length should look for specialized coverages that aren't always available under other policies out there. These include things like:

  • Wreck Removal
  • Pollution Coverage
  • High Liability limits

Optional coverages should also give boaters that little extra - the custom coverages that fit their lifestyle, whether they enjoy early-morning fishing, afternoon wave-riding or evening cruises. Some of the options should include:

  • Towing and Assistance - for the boat and trailer
  • Replacement Cost for personal property
  • Replacement Cost Coverage on trailer

21 jailed for life in India over Gujarat killings

An Indian court Monday sentenced 21 people to life imprisonment over the massacre of 11 Muslims during some of the country's worst religious riots a decade ago in the western state of Gujarat.

Another 61 people were acquitted for lack of evidence in the case, in which rioters in the Gujarati town of Visnagar attacked a Muslim family, locked them inside their house and then set them ablaze.

Of the 11 who died in what became known as the Dipda Darwaza massacre, two were children. Visnagar is 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of the state's main city, Ahmedabad.

The violence in Gujarat was triggered by the killing of nearly 60 Hindu pilgrims travelling in a train that was torched by a mob.

The 21 accused were given the life term after the court convicted them on charges of attempted murder, arson and rioting while one former police officer was given a one year jail term for dereliction of duty, public prosecutor Mukesh Brahmbhatt told AFP.

But the judge rejected prosecution claims that the Visnagar violence was pre-meditated, Brahmbhatt said.

The bloodletting in Gujarat was triggered by the deaths of nearly 60 Hindu pilgrims travelling in a train that was blamed on a Muslim mob.

An inquiry by the Gujarat government, led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), concluded that the fire was caused by a conspiracy but a federal government probe later said it was an accident.

Hindus hungry for revenge rampaged through Muslim neighbourhoods across Gujarat following the train fire during the violence that marked some of India's worst religious riots since independence from Britain in 1947.

Human rights groups said over 2,000 people, mainly Muslims, were hacked, beaten or burned to death.

But the federal Congress government published figures in 2005 saying 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed and 223 other people were reported missing.

Gujarat's Chief Minister Narendra Modi -- the BJP poster boy who is thought to harbour prime ministerial ambitions -- was widely criticised for failing to stop the riots. He has denied any wrongdoing.

A total of 84 people have already been convicted in four separate cases relating to the Gujarat riots.

Afinitor Delays Progression of Advanced Breast Cancer -Breast ...

? Breast Cancer news ? Jul 30, 2012

Among postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer that had become resistant to hormonal therapy, the combination of Afinitor? (everolimus) and Aromasin? (exemestane) delayed cancer progression to a greater extent than Aromasin alone. The results of this Phase III clinical trial were presented at the 2011 European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress.

Each year roughly 200,000 U.S. women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Many of these breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive, meaning that exposure to estrogen and/or progesterone can cause them to grow.

Treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer often includes hormonal therapies such as tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor. Tamoxifen acts by blocking estrogen receptors, and aromatase inhibitors suppress the production of estrogen in postmenopausal women. Aromatase inhibitors include Femara? (letrozole), Arimidex? (anastrozole), and Aromasin? (exemestane). Many women with advanced breast cancer become resistant to hormonal therapy, and treatment options for these women remain limited.

Afinitor is an oral medication that works by inhibiting a protein known as mTOR. The mTOR protein plays an important role in regulating cancer cell division and blood vessel growth. Currently, Afinitor is used for the treatment of selected patients with kidney cancer, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA).

To explore the use of Afinitor among women with advanced, estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, researchers conducted a Phase III clinical trial (BOLERO-2) among 724 women. All of the women had experienced cancer recurrence or progression in spite of treatment with Femara or Arimidex. Study participants were treated with Aromasin alone or in combination with Afinitor.

Survival without cancer progression was 6.9 months among women treated with both Afinitor and Aromasin, compared with 2.8 months among women treated with Aromasin alone.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Novartis AG drug Afinitor to treat women with a certain type of breast cancer.

The drug is the first in a class known as mTOR inhibitors to be approved for post-menopausal women with advanced hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. The European Medicines Agency in June also endorsed Afinitor as a breast cancer treatment.

Afinitor, also known as everolimus, is designed to be given in combination with another drug, Aromasin, to treat women whose cancer has recurred or progressed after treatment with two other therapies. Aromasin is made by Pfizer Inc.

Novartis?s drug - expected to become a major seller for the Swiss drugmaker - is already approved to treat patients with four other types of cancer, including kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

?Afinitor is another example of the value of continuing to study drugs in additional types of cancer after their initial approval,? said Dr. Richard Pazdur, head of the FDA?s cancer drugs office.

The most common serious side effects in the Afinitor group were stomatitis (inflammation of the lining of the mouth; 7.7%), anemia (5.8%), shortness of breath (3.9%), hyperglycemia (4.3%), fatigue (3.7%) and pneumonitis (lung inflammation; 3.1%), and elevated liver enzymes (3.1%).

?This approval redefines the treatment and management of advanced hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, offering a critical new option for physicians and patients,? said the co-lead investigator for the main Afinitor trial, Dr. Gabriel Hortobagyi, who is also a consultant for Novartis and chairman of Breast Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

These results suggest that the addition of Afinitor to Aromasin improved outcomes among women with advanced breast cancer that had previously been treated with hormonal therapy. Afinitor has not yet been approved for use in breast cancer.

The nation's weather

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, July 28, 2012.

Expect more showers and thunderstorms across the eastern U.S. as two frontal boundaries affect the region on Saturday. One cold front will extend down the East Coast, from the Northeast to the Gulf states. Meanwhile, another cold front over the Upper Midwest is moving over the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. These systems are expected to produce widespread scattered showers and thunderstorms for most areas east of the Mississippi River Valley.

Behind this activity in the Plains, a trough of low pressure is moving off the Northern Rockies and into the Northern Plains. Flow around this system will pull moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico, feeding energy into the region. This will allow for showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Dakotas, moving into the Upper Midwest by nightfall. Some of these storms may turn severe with strong winds and large hail. South of this system, warm temperatures will continue for the Central and Southern Plains as high pressure dominates. Expect heat advisories to remain in effect as high temperatures approach 100 degrees again on Saturday.

Out West, monsoonal moisture lingers over the Four Corners and kicks up more thunderstorm activity for the Southern and Central Rockies. Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas.

Pulmonary embolism, treatment | Revista Women's Health

Pulmonary embolism

Overview

What is pulmonary embolism?

A pulmonary embolism (pull-mun-ary EM-bo-lizm), or eg, a sudden blockage in a lung artery. The blockage is usually due to a blood clot that travels to the lung from a vein in the leg.

A clot that forms part of the body and travels in the bloodstream from another part of the body is called an embolus (em-bo-lus).

Pe is a serious condition that can cause:

  • Permanent damage to part of your lung from lack of blood flow to lung tissues
  • Low levels of blood oxygen
  • Damage to other organs in your body not getting enough oxygen

If a blood clot is very large, or if there are many clots, PE can cause death.

Causes

In 9 of 10 cases, pulmonary embolism (pe) begins as a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs (a condition known as deep vein thrombosis). The clot breaks off from the vein and travels through the bloodstream to the lungs where it can block an artery.

The animation shows how a blood clot in a deep vein in the leg can travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. Click the ?Start? button to play the animation. Written and spoken explanations for each picture. Use the buttons in the lower right corner to pause, restart, or replay the animation, or use the scroll bar below the buttons to scroll through the frames.

Who is at risk for pulmonary embolism?

Pulmonary embolism (PE) affects both men and women. The risk increases with age. For every 10 years after age 60 doubles the risk of eg.

Certain hereditary conditions, such as factor V Leiden, increase the risk of blood clotting and thus, the risk of eg.

Major risk factors

People at high risk of pe are those who:

  • Have deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in the leg) or a history of deep vein thrombosis
  • Has had before eg

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism (PE) include unexplained shortness of breath, trouble breathing, chest pain, cough or coughing up blood. An arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) also may indicate eg.

In some cases, the only signs and symptoms are associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). These include swelling of the leg or along the vein in the leg, pain or tenderness in the leg, a feeling of increased temperature in the area of the leg that is swollen or tender red or spots on the skin in the affected leg. Consult your doctor immediately if you have symptoms of PE or DVT.

How is pulmonary embolism?

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is treated with medications, procedures and other therapies. The main objectives of treatment are eg to stop the blood clot from getting bigger and keep new clots from forming.

Treatment may include medications to thin blood and reduce its ability to clot. If your symptoms are life threatening, your doctor may give you medicine to dissolve the clot faster. Rarely, your doctor may use surgery or another procedure to remove the clot.

Aging AIDS epidemic raises new health questions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? AIDS is graying. By the end of the decade, the government estimates, more than half of Americans living with HIV will be over 50. Even in developing countries, more people with the AIDS virus are surviving to middle age and beyond.

That's good news ? but it's also a challenge. There's growing evidence that people who have spent decades battling the virus may be aging prematurely. At the International AIDS Conference this week, numerous studies are examining how heart disease, thinning bones and a list of other health problems typically seen in the senior years seem to hit many people with HIV when they're only in their 50s.

"I'm 54, but I feel older," said Carolyn Massey of Laurel, Md., who has lived with HIV for nearly 20 years.

"When I hear young people talk about, 'Well you get HIV and you take your drugs and you'll be all right' ? that's just not the truth," she said. "This is a lifelong thing we're talking about, and it unfolds every day on you."

The graying isn't just because people like Massey are surviving longer. Some of it comes from older adults being newly diagnosed, a trend U.S. health officials say is small but slowly growing. Yes, grandparents still have sex ? and that's an age group missed by all those hip safe-sex messages aimed at teens and 20-somethings.

"They let down their guard," is how Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it.

Already, a third of the nearly 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S. are over 50, and by 2020 half will be, Fenton said at one of numerous sessions on aging at the world's largest AIDS meeting.

People 50 or older accounted for 17 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2009, according to the CDC's latest data. That's up from 13 percent in 2001.

There aren't as good counts in poor regions of the world, where access to life-saving medications came years later than in developed countries.

But even in hard-hit sub-Saharan Africa, home to most of world's HIV-infected population, studies suggest 3 million people living with HIV are 50-plus, said Dr. Joel Negin of the University of Sydney in Australia. By 2040, he said, that could reach 9 million.

There, challenges are different. Ruth Waryaro of Kenya, addressing the conference on her 65th birthday, said clinic workers hassle her when she goes to pick up her monthly supply of medication ? not believing a grandmother really needs it.

"If you're not strong enough, you just leave the medication and go home," said Waryaro, who raised four children of her own and now is raising four AIDS orphans. She also has diabetes and high blood pressure.

As Negin pointedly told the conference, "50 is not old." But for years, world health authorities didn't even measure HIV in people beyond age 49.

Today, people who are diagnosed and treated early can expect a near-normal life-span, Dr. Anthony Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health, told The Associated Press.

The new focus is on what these pioneering survivors can expect as they reach their 50s, 60s and beyond. They're now getting chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and osteoporosis ? some of the common ailments when anyone gets old. But studies suggest people with HIV may be at higher risk for some of those illnesses, or get them earlier than usual.

"It's almost created a new subspecialty of medicine," Fauci said.

Perhaps the strongest evidence links HIV and an increased risk of heart disease. Some AIDS medications raise that risk. But in research published for the AIDS meeting, scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital uncovered another reason.

They scanned the arteries of people with and without HIV, and found the HIV patients had more inflammation inside their arteries, putting them at risk for the kind of clots that trigger heart attacks. That's even though the HIV patients had their virus well-controlled and weren't that old ? their average age was 52, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

HIV triggers body-wide inflammation as a person's immune system tries to fight the virus, a process that persists and can quietly damage organs even with good medications, CDC's Fenton said.

HIV is not acting in a vacuum, said Dr. Amy Justice of Yale University, noting that people's histories of smoking, for example, also contribute to inflammation.

But she pointed to data from a Veterans Affairs study that said older people with HIV use more medications for other diseases than HIV-free patients the same age.

At the conference, some older people with HIV lined up to have their photographs made and their personal histories recorded, part of a Web project called "The Graying of AIDS."

It's a chance to be counted, and share knowledge.

"We're so concerned about the youth factor, we forget about the people who've brought us thus far," said Massey, the Maryland woman, who leads an HIV group called Older Women Embracing Life and works with churches to raise HIV awareness.

CDC's Fenton noted that those voices can help other older adults realize they're at risk, when they're getting back onto the dating scene after years of monogamous relationships. Older people don't use condoms as much as younger people.

"We still have this huge issue with stigma so thick you can cut it with a knife," says Massey, who also wants HIV testing to become a routine part of health check-ups. "We have to normalize the conversation."

Novel therapy may prevent damage to the retina in diabetic eye diseases

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center have identified a compound that could interrupt the chain of events that cause damage to the retina in diabetic retinopathy. The finding is significant because it could lead to a novel therapy that targets two mechanisms at the root of the disease: inflammation and the weakening of the blood barrier that protects the retina.

To date, treatments for diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans, have been aimed largely at one of those mechanisms.

In diabetic retinopathy, damage to the retina results, in part, from the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein that weakens the protective blood-retinal barrier. Recent drugs targeting VEGF have exhibited good response for nearly half of the patients with diabetic retinopathy. But researchers believe that there is also an inflammatory component that may contribute to the disease process.

The study, published in the Biochemical Journal, June 2012 [epub ahead of print] identifies a specific protein common to both pathways as an important target in regulating the disease process in which blood vessels become leaky, and provides a drug that may be developed into a therapeutic intervention for patients in which anti-VEGF treatment alone is not sufficient.

"In diabetic retinopathy and a host of other retinal diseases, increases in VEGF and inflammatory factors -- some of the same factors that contribute to the response to an infection -- cause blood vessels in the eye to leak which, in turn, results in a buildup of fluid in the neural tissue of the retina," says David A. Antonetti, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Molecular and Integrative Physiology, who has also been awarded a Jules and Doris Stein Professorship from Research to Prevent Blindness. "This insidious form of modified inflammation can eventually lead to blindness."

The compound targets atypical protein kinase C (aPKC), required for VEGF to make blood vessels leak. Moreover, Antonetti's laboratory has demonstrated that the compound is effective at blocking damage from tumor necrosis factor also elevated in diabetic retinopathy that comprises part of the inflammation. Benefits of this compound could extend to therapies for uveitis, or changes to the brain blood vessels in the presence of brain tumors or stroke.

"This is a great leap forward," says Antonetti. "We've identified an important target in regulating blood vessel leakage in the eye and we have a therapy that works in animal models. Our research is in the early stages of development. We still have a long way to go to demonstrate effectiveness of this compound in humans to create a new therapy but the results are very promising."

IDC: Samsung and Apple ship almost half of all smartphones, but Korean manufacturer maintains lead

IDC Apple and Samsung ship almost half of all smartphones, jockey for first and second place

IDC's latest figures offer some predictable reading. More phones are being sold than ever before; 406 million units were sold in Q2, against 401.8 million in the same period last year -- with a 42 percent increase in smartphone sales. The winners? Perrenial court antagonists, Samsung and Apple, with the duo doubling their combined market share over the last two years. Samsung maintains its lead, reaching over 50 million phones sold -- and a new quarterly sales record -- while Apple saw a quarter-over-quarter decline, as buyers presumably wait for Cupertino's latest iteration, or go elsewhere. Nokia, meanwhile, had another "transitional" quarter, with sales of both Symbian and MeeGo devices shrinking, although its Windows Phones proved stronger. According to IDC's figures, Nokia and Microsoft's team-up handset sales have doubled since last quarter. HTC misses out on a top three spot, but its fortunes appear to have improved over the last two quarters, with the IDC pointing the finger at a more streamlined product range from the Taiwan manufacturer. ZTE continues to nip at its heels, reaching the top five thanks to strong entry-level smartphone sales in China, while continuing to inch onto US shores. If you're looking for a full breakdown of all phones sold, dumb and otherwise, read up at the source below.

GoodCorporation: How can businesses bridge the 'ethics gap'?

According to business leaders, politicians and much of the media, the corporate world has taken a long, hard look at itself following the crash of 2008. Repeated calls for greater corporate responsibility have been issued and some of the findings from the latest CGMA survey on business ethics would suggest that some progress has been made.

On the positive side more companies have ethics policies, training and reporting hotlines than in the previous survey of 2008. Even more encouraging, is that over two thirds of respondents who had observed unethical conduct reported it, despite just over a quarter fearing trouble if they did and only half feeling satisfied about the way their ethical concern was handled.

However, there were a number of findings that are a major cause for concern. Despite the fact that four out of five companies have ethical policies in place that should be driving a rise in standards of behaviour, over a third of respondents feel under pressure to compromise those standards. This seems to indicate that although businesses are increasingly saying the right thing, they are not doing the right thing!

One key finding from the survey that could be driving this is a decline in the number of corporate leaders and senior executives taking formal responsibility for their company?s ethics policy. This issue of ?tone from the top? is frequently raised at GoodCorporation?s Business Ethics debates and is widely acknowledged by most of the UK?s leading businesses as being vital to successfully embedding an ethical corporate culture.? While this is in decline, it seems highly unlikely that we will see reality matching the rhetoric in terms of ethical behaviour.

Equally worrying, is the lack of measuring and monitoring of ethical conduct, despite the growing importance of non-financial reporting. Although more firms are now collecting ethics-related information (up six per cent), there is still a significant gap between the number of companies with ethics codes (80 per cent) and the number that evaluate the effectiveness of them (36 per cent).

One of the reasons for this perhaps, is that for many, measuring ethical behaviour is in the ?too difficult? box.? Evaluating management practices to see if they are ?fair? or ?protect reputation? sounds like a valuable exercise ? but one that appears to be too difficult in reality. Our work suggests, however, that management practices can be measured in this way and the key to success is to combine a traditional audit of management practices together with surveys of customers, employees and other stakeholders to find out if they believe the organisation?s practices are reputable or not.

These issues are essential for the corporate world to tackle. Corporates might argue that, in the current climate, trust is the least of their worries; however trust in businesses is now languishing at an all time low. However these issues of trust and reputation are closely associated with the risk of significant organisational failure. A recent study of 18 major corporate financial crises revealed that failures of ethos, culture and behaviour that had gone unnoticed were the very cause of the crisis and lead directly to a reputational catastrophe for the organisation.

Embedding a sound ethical culture that is measured and monitored is therefore an essential risk-management tool, key to bridging the ?ethics gap? and vital for boards if they are to protect their organisations and allow their shareholders to sleep at night.

Syrian armored column closes in on Aleppo

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria sent thousands of troops towards Aleppo on Wednesday, where attack helicopters have been pounding rebel fighters, stepping up its assault on the country's largest city to combat a growing revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria's 16-month-old uprising has been transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.

Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.

Syrian forces fired artillery and rocket barrages early on Wednesday at the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize it from rebels, causing mass panic and forcing hundreds of families to flee the area, residents and opposition activists said.

The 216th mechanized battalion headquartered near Tel started bombarding the town of about 100,000 people at 3:15 a.m. (0015 GMT) and initial reports indicated residential apartment blocks were being hit, they said.

"Military helicopters are flying now over the town. People were awakened by the sound of explosions and are running away," Rafe Alam, one of the activists, said by phone from a hill overlooking Tel. "Electricity and telephones have been cut off."

Opposition activists said thousands of troops had withdrawn with their tanks and armored vehicles from Idlib province near the Turkish border and were headed towards Aleppo.

Rebels attacked the rear of the troops withdrawing from the region, activist Abdelrahman Bakran said from the area.

Military experts believe an overstretched Syrian army is pulling back to concentrate its efforts on fighting insurgents in Aleppo and Damascus, important power centers for the government, while leaving outlying areas in the hands of rebels.

Turkey said crossings with Syria would be closed from Wednesday in response to worsening security conditions. Fighting around Aleppo has shifted hostilities towards the north and Syrian rebels have seized several posts on their side of the frontier with Turkey in the past week.

HELICOPTERS FIRING

In Aleppo, helicopters were seen firing missiles throughout Tuesday, residents said. Rebels were battling government forces by the gates of the historic old city. Troops fired mortars and shells at rebels armed with rifles and machine guns.

"I heard at least 20 rockets fired, I think from helicopters, and also a lot of machine gun fire," a resident near one of the areas being shelled, who asked to be identified only by his first name Omar, said by telephone.

"Almost everyone has fled in panic, even my family. I have stayed to try to stop the looters; we hear they often come after an area is shelled."

Residents said fixed-wing jets had also flown over the city, followed by loud noises, although there were contradictory reports as to whether they had fired. Video footage posted by activists appeared to show a warplane firing its guns.

Assad's forces have occasionally launched air strikes from fixed-wing jets on other cities during the uprising, but tend to rely on helicopters for air strikes in urban areas.

The uprising has entered a new and more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.

Last Wednesday, an explosion killed four members of Assad's inner circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a coup in 1970.

Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from power for many months, and now say they believe his days are numbered. But they fear that he will fight to the end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.

Syria raised the alarm even further on Monday by confirming that it had chemical and biological weapons. In a statement that may have been intended to reassure the world but seemed to have the opposite effect, it said it would not use poison gas against rebels, only against external threats.

Assad's international protector Russia added its voice on Tuesday to those of Western countries warning him not to use chemical weapons. Western diplomats said Russia may have pressed Syria to make Monday's statement after the United States and Israel openly discussed their worries about chemical weapons.

U.S. President Barack Obama said the world would hold Assad and his entourage accountable if they used chemical weapons.

DEFECTOR SPEAKS

Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, a member of Assad's inner circle who fled Syria this month, appeared on television in his first public comments since defecting. He called on troops to abandon the government.

"I address you ... as one of the Syrian Arab Army's sons who reject the criminal behavior of this corrupt regime. The honorable people in the military would not accept these crimes," he said on al-Arabiya television.

Tlas is a member of the Sunni Muslim majority, and his defection was seen as a sign that the Sunni establishment had abandoned Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect.

MOSQUE ATTACK

Elsewhere in the country, activists said government troops and pro-Assad militia known as shabbiha had attacked a mosque in a village northwest of the city of Hama.

"Troops and shabbiha left the roadblock on the edge of Shariaa and crossed the main road and began firing automatic rifles on the worshippers as they were entering the mosque," activist Jamil al-Hamwi said by telephone from the area.

"We have confirmed the names of 15 bodies and it is estimated there is a similar number still to be collected from the streets," said Hamwi, who uses a pseudonym for security reasons. The account, like others from activists, could not be confirmed. Syria restricts access by international journalists.

At least nine people were killed in army shelling of al-Herak, a town south of Deraa, the cradle of the revolt against more than four decades of Assad family rule, activists said.

Video posted on the Internet showed the shattered bodies of a veiled woman and six children in colorful pyjamas, some of them very young. Four lay on one doctor's table.

In Damascus, troops were trying to snuff out rebel resistance in several areas, including Barzeh, near the centre, and the southern districts of Hajar al-Aswad, Asali and Qadam.

Tanks patrolled the streets of Midan, a neighborhood recaptured by the army from rebels on Friday.

The ferocity of the Syria conflict has only worsened, with 1,261 people killed since fighting intensified in Damascus on July 15, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from anti-Assad activists.

That made last week by far the bloodiest in an uprising in which activists say at least 18,000 people have been killed.

Obama urges tighter background checks on gun buyers

President Barack Obama pauses as he talks about the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting as he addresses the National??In his broadest remarks on gun control yet in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater, President Barack Obama called late Wednesday for tougher background checks designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals -- that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," the president, who has called for reimposing the Assault Weapons Ban, said in a speech to the National Urban League.

"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily," he said. "These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

But Obama also offered a nod to the difficult politics of gun control, portraying himself as a believer in the individual right to bear arms, and acknowledging that calls to action after an incident like the one in Aurora often fade.

"When there is an extraordinarily heartbreaking tragedy like the one we saw, there's always an outcry immediately after for action. And there's talk of new reforms, and there's talk of new legislation," Obama said in his speech. ?"And too often, those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere."

"And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms.? And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -? that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage," he said.

The president also singled out youth violence, and warned that government can only do so much. "It's up to us, as parents and as neighbors and as teachers and as mentors, to make sure our young people don't have that void inside them," he said.

(It's unclear how much political capital Obama will risk in an election-year gun-control fight. On the way to Aurora on Sunday, White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked whether there would be no renewed push for the assault weapons ban. "I wouldn't argue with your assessment about that," Carney replied. And White House officials have repeatedly emphasized that they are focused on enforcing "existing law.")

On a lighter note, Obama warned American school kids that they have to "hit the books" if they want to compete with their peers in rising economic powers -- and avoid temptations like TV's "Real Housewives."

"You're competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. They're not hanging out. They're not getting over.? They're not playing video games.? They're not watching 'Real Housewives.' ?I'm just saying: It's a two-way street.? You've got to earn success," he said.

"That wasn't in my prepared remarks," he said, to laughter from the crowd. "But I'm just saying."

Gliese 581 g Tops List of 5 Potentially Habitable Exoplanets

Gliese 581 g shot to the top of a list put out by researchers at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo?s Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) after a new study marshaled support for its long-debated existence

The controversial exoplanet Gliese 581g is the best candidate to host life beyond our own solar system, according to a new ranking of potentially habitable alien worlds.

Gliese 581g shot to the top of the list ? which was published Thursday (July 19) by researchers at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo?s Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) ? after a new study marshaled support for its long-debated existence.

The exoplanet was discovered in September 2010, but other astronomers began casting doubt on its existence just weeks later. Now Gliese 581g's discoverers have rebutted their critics' charges in a new paper, and have done so effectively enough to get the PHL onboard.

Here's a brief rundown of the PHL's top five habitable alien planets:

Gliese 581g
This rocky world ? if it does indeed exist ? is just 20 light-years away from our solar system. It's likely two to three times as massive as Earth and zips around its parent star, the red dwarf Gliese 581, every 30 days or so. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

This orbit places the planet squarely in the star's "habitable zone" ? that just-right range of distances where liquid water, and perhaps life as we know it, could exist.

Gliese 581g has at least four, and possibly five, planetary neighbors. The team that spotted Gliese 581g also detected another planet, known as 581f, circling much farther away from the star. But scientists are still arguing about that world's existence, too.

Gliese 667Cc
Gliese 667Cc, which was discovered in February 2012 by the same core team that spotted Gliese 581g, orbits a red dwarf 22 light-years away, in the constellation Scorpius (The Scorpion).

The alien world is a so-called "super Earth" that's at least 4.5 times as massive as our planet, and it completes an orbit every 28 days. At least one other planet resides in the 667C system.

Gliese 667Cc's parent star is part of a triple-star system, so the planet's night sky would probably be a sight to behold.

Kepler-22b
Kepler-22b was spotted by NASA's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope, which has detected more than 2,300 potential exoplanets since its March 2009 launch. Only a small number have been confirmed so far, but the vast majority should end up being the real deal, researchers have said.

Kepler-22b, whose discovery was announced in December 2011, is a super Earth about 2.4 times as wide as our planet. If the greenhouse effect operates on Kepler-22b like it does on Earth, the alien world would have an average surface temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius), researchers have said.

The exoplanet is found about 600 light-years away, and it orbits a star very much like our own sun.

HD 85512b
HD 85512b is another super Earth, one that's thought to be about 3.6 times as massive as our planet. The alien world is found about 35 light-years from us, in the direction of the constellation Vela (The Sail).

Astronomers announced the discovery of HD 85512b ? and about 50 other alien planets spotted by the HARPS spectrograph on a telescope in Chile ? in September 2011. The planet's estimated average surface temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

Gliese 581d
This world, which is about seven times as massive as Earth, orbits a bit farther out than its planetary sibling Gliese 581g.

15 Early Signs Of Cancer - Health - Nairaland

15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:39pm On Jul 25Yesterday, Ghana's President John Atta Mills succumbed to Cancer of the throat. Our own former President Umaru Yar'adua, though infected by a cocktail of diseases, also had lung cancer among the potpourri of ailments that felled him 2 years ago. From Tayo Aderinokun (ex-CEO, GTB) to Bayo Ligali (ex-CEO, Zain) to Ibrahim Jega (ex-ED, UBA) to Alaire Alaibe, the C-disease has been ravaging the land. We will be wallowing in deceit if we think only the VIPs play host to the Big-C. Truth is many common men and women also die on daily basis from Cancer affliction.

Early detection, medical experts have emphasized, can go a long way in minimizing, if not checking outright, cancer infection. I find the article below illuminating.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:40pm On Jul 25Spotting the warning signs of cancer early is often crucial to treating the disease effectively. While that means scheduling regular checkups with your doctor and making sure you?re getting the screening tests you need when you need them, it?s just as important to be watching for any subtle changes to how you?re feeling. After all, no one knows your body better than you ? so it?s crucial that you pay attention to and follow up on anything that seems out of the ordinary. Here are 15 possible warning signs of cancer that every woman should watch for.

1, Unexplained Weight Loss
Realizing that you suddenly fit into your skinny jeans may seem like a pleasant surprise ? but the reality is that unexplained weight loss (or weight gain, for that matter) is usually a red flag. If you've lost 10 pounds or more in less than a month (without changing your diet or exercise routine), you should see your doctor.
Unexplained weight loss can be an early sign of pancreatic, stomach, esophageal or lung cancer (as well as other health problems, like an overactive thyroid, diabetes, depression or liver disease).

2, Changes to Your bosoms
Most women recognize a lump in their bosom as something that should be checked out by a doctor. But there are other changes to your bosoms that could also signal cancer. If you notice any of the following, let your doctor know:
? redness or thickening of skin around the bosom
? cellulite-like dimples or a red or purplish discoloration in the skin
? your bosoms feel hot, swollen or irritated
In addition, if you notice an unusual unmentionable discharge, or if you notice changes to you unmentionable (like suddenly appearing flattened, inverted or turned sideways), report the changes to a doctor.

3, Bleeding Between Periods
Every woman's period is different, and for some women, spotting is common. But if you're typically regular and start bleeding between periods, or if you bleed after reaching menopause, let your doctor know. Nine in 10 women with endometrial cancer report irregular bleeding as an early sign. Also, some women mistake bleeding from their gastrointestinal tract as spotting or as their period. GI tract bleeding can be an early sign of colorectal cancer.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:41pm On Jul 254, Bloating
It's normal to feel bloated once in awhile, especially after a big meal or during your period. But if that bloated feeling persists for more than a couple of weeks or continues to get worse, talk to your doctor. Also let your doctor know if you experience bloating in conjunction with feeling unusually full, a change to your bowel or bladder habits, or low back or pelvic pain. Those are often the early symptoms of ovarian cancer.

5, Skin Changes
Most women know that a yearly skin check to spot any new moles (or changes to existing moles) is the best way to spot skin cancer while it's easily treatable. But other skin changes can also signal skin cancer. Tell your doctor if you notice any waxy lumps, scaly skin patches, or spot a sore or rash that doesn't heal.
Also note if you have any excessive bruising ? especially on the fingers and hands ? or if you notice any skin bleeding that seems unusually hard to stop (both are an early sign of leukemia). If you've monitored any skin abnormalities for more than a few weeks and have noticed no improvement, consult your doctor.

6, Constant Fatigue
Balancing work or school, family obligations and hitting the gym ? all while trying to maintain some semblance of a social life ? can make you feel like you?re always on the go. It?s completely normal for most women to feel tired and run down from time to time. But if your fatigue doesn't let up after getting rest, head to your doctor. Prolonged fatigue is a sign of many different types of cancers, or may signal another health problem, like a thyroid condition or iron imbalance.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:41pm On Jul 257, Difficulty Swallowing
Having problems swallowing could be an early symptom of esophageal, throat, lung or thyroid cancer. If you have pressure in your throat or feel like something is stuck in your windpipe, see your doctor.

8, A Chronic Cough
Coughs are most often caused by allergies or infections. And while they may linger as you recover from the flu or a cold, having a cough that doesn't go away or that is accompanied by chest pain is a symptom of many types of cancer, including lung cancer. If you have a cough that lasts more than 3 to 4 weeks, or if your cough goes away and then reappears consistently, make an appointment with your doctor.

9, Feeling Unusually Full
Constantly feeling full despite having eaten little, or experiencing a prolonged loss of appetite could be a tip-off to ovarian cancer (as well as other, less serious health problems like GERD or IBS). If the feelings persist over a period of a few weeks, or if they're accompanied by vomiting, bloating, a fever or weight loss or weight gain, let your doctor know.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:42pm On Jul 2510, Swollen Lymph Nodes
Changes in your lymphatic system are most often due to an infection ? but in some cases, swollen, firm lymph nodes in the armpit, groin, or neck could be a sign of danger. If the swelling continues for more than a month, or the swollen glands seem to be getting bigger, see your doctor.

11, Shortness of Breath
If you frequently have difficulty breathing, especially when you?re not doing anything strenuous, it could signal a more serious health problem, including lung or thyroid cancer. You may also be suffering from bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism or other heart or lung problems ? all of which require prompt medical attention.

12, Frequent Fevers
Often times, a fever is a welcome sign ? it signals that your body is fighting off an infection. But if you have a persistent fever that isn?t explained by an infection, it may signal a blood cancer like leukemia or lymphoma. A fever that lasts more than four days warrants a call to your doctor.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:43pm On Jul 2513, Changes to Nails
Your nails suffer a lot of normal wear and tear every day, and it isn?t unusual for them to suffer bangs that can leave white spots or bruising. Plus, everyone?s nails look different ? some people naturally have weaker, peeling or otherwise less-than-perfect nails ? and that?s also normal. However, there are instances where unexplained nail changes can point to more serious problems. Dark streaks or spots under your nails could indicate skin cancer, while having pale nails could mean liver cancer.

14, Blood in Your Urine or Stool
Blood in your stool can be caused by several different medical conditions, including hemorrhoids, BehindBased fissures or cracks, inflammation of the colon or peptic ulcers. However, it?s also a sign of colorectal cancer.
Blood in your urine can signal bladder or kidney infections or stones, an enlarged prostate; it may also be the result of certain medications, or over-vigorous exercise. But in some cases, blood in the urine can indicate bowel or kidney cancer. If you see blood in your urine or stool, it?s important to let your doctor know, so that he or she can pinpoint the cause.

15, Persistent Pain
We all have days where we feel achy or sore. But chronic, persistent pain isn?t something you should write off as a side effect of aging or over-exercising. Back pain, pelvic or abdominal pain and even what seems like a run-of-the mill stomachache or indigestion can signal many different types of cancer, from liver, pancreatic and bosom to ovarian, endometrial and colorectal. If you can?t find a plausible cause for the pain you?re feeling, and if it continues to dog you, talk to a doctor.

Prostate cancer should be screened for yearly in men above 40years. Symptoms include difficulty and pain on urination, hesitancy, terminal dribbling, poor urine stream. Also there may be weight loss, bone pains, and constitutional symptoms in advanced cases.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by ACM10: 2:45pm On Jul 25There is no specific early sign of cancer. Most of the symptoms and signs you mentioned are also associated with late-stage malignancy. Cancer can occur in any body tissue, and each one presents with unique symptoms. Some of the symptoms that you mentioned can occur in terminal stage of cancer.

BTW, SIGNS and SYMPTOMS connotes different meaning.
SIGN: an indication of a particular disorder that is observed by a physician but is not apparent to the patient.
SYMPTOM: an indication of a disease or disorder noticed by the patient himself.
In essence, a layman can never notice any sign, but a physician can pick up the signs of a particular disorder from a patient.

Since there are no specific early symptom of cancer, there are factors that warns a patient of the probability of developing of cancer. Those factors are collectively called Risk Factors. Some of them are, positive family history, cigarette smoking, intake of oral contraceptive pill, exposure to radiation, risky intimate behaviour, etc

It is advised that people should subject themselves to thorough medical examinations every 2yrs after the age of 40

Nice question! This is a form of cancer that grabs my interest immediately it's mentioned. I'm so much interested in it because it runs in my family. My great-grandfather suffered it. My grandfather got his prostate removed in 1990. Two of my granny's brothers has already done a prostate removal surgery called called prostatectomy. It reoccured in one of them and he has since succumbed to it.

Prostate is only found in men. It functions to nourish the sperm. It is the only organ that continues to grow throughout life. Its diseases can be prostatitis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer, etc. Prostate cancer is a disease of the elderly. It occurs in mostly people that are 50 and above. Though it might occur much earlier. Its symptom can vary. But some of the important ones are hematuria, waist pain, constipation, urinary incontinence, weight loss or even dysuria, urgency, terminal dribbling, frequency, weak stream, etc. Its symptom is related to its degree of spread.
It can be detected early, and when this is done, surgeons aims for a cure. Some investigative modalities like Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) can predict the transformation in the prostate. The result of the PSA will guide the surgeon on whether to perform biopsy. The treatment is often called radical prostatectomy. Again the choice of the surgery is determined by the degree of spread of the cancer.
In late stage presentation, surgeons aims at palliation. This involves the removal of the influences that aids the growth and the spread of the cancer. Surgeons often remove the testis with the administration of drugs that blocks the androgen production in the body. They call it total androgen blocade. The aim at this stage is to alleviate the patients
symptoms and prolong his life.

Sorry, I mean risky sexual behaviour. Engaging in indiscriminate sexual activities without protection. Risky sexual behaviour can predispose one to the infection by human pappiloma virus(HPV) and hepatitis B & C. The two viruses has been implicated in the induction and progression of Cervical cancer and Liver cancer respectivelyRe: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by charloski(m): 3:51pm On Jul 25

Prostate cancer is the enlargement of the prostate - a walnut-size organ in every male. Men of black origin are of higher risk and should start prostate exams from about age 40. Symptoms usually don't present early, and when u start feeling symptomatic, chances are that it might have spread. If sm1 has had it in ur lineage, u should be more proactive. Symptoms include: painful urination, delay in passing urine, frequent urination... H/ever, having these doesn't necessarily mean u have prostate cancerRe: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by ibsmooth: 4:34pm On Jul 25

The thing is it's not just risky se.xual behaviour, you can still get hpv just by sleeping with one person.----(Mistaken)Most sexu.ally active people will get it at one point in their lifetime.

For the contraceptive pill, it says you are at a higher risk of getting cancer(I think cervical cancer) using it for more than 5years but it also says it reduces your chance of getting cancer(I think bosom cancer).

I don't know whether they have the hpv vaccination in Nigeria.

Jarus: 13, Changes to Nails

Sorry for your loss. I feel ur pain bro deeply
I lost my younger brother (Graduate) aged 24 on May 2, 2012 to Leukaemia (cancer that affects the blood cells). The strange thing was that he never manifested any of the symptons listed except for his loss of weight, bleedin gums (which we attributed to his regular visit to his Dentist). But aside from these, he looked ok.
The only treatment is God's factor and early diagnosis cos if its too late you are a dead man walking.
