SC Boeing employees file complaint against union

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Three employees of Boeing Co. in South Carolina have filed an unfair labor practice charge against a union recently at the center of a national dispute.

The National Right to Work Foundation says the complaint filed Wednesday with the National Labor Relations Board says the International Association of Machinists retaliated against workers at the non-union plant.

Earlier this month, the NLRB dropped a lawsuit against Boeing, moving to end the case after the Machinists approved a four-year contract extension with the manufacturer. The NLRB lawsuit said Boeing broke labor laws when it opened a North Charleston production line, punishing unionized workers in Washington state for past strikes, and argued Boeing should return work there.

Boeing said it needed the South Carolina plant for valid economic reasons.

The Time I Planted a Pipe Bomb Under Someone's Truck [Video]

I almost crash into a truck, at first. I can turn on a dime and accelerate like a tiny nitrous-oxide-fueled bat out of hell—even though I'm holding a 10-pound pipe bomb, 30 percent of my body weight. I don't know what I'm doing, really. But by the time I get to the truck to plant the bomb, it's easy. I know exactly what to do. More »

Forrest Gump, Hannibal Lecter join film registry (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Bambi, Forrest Gump and Hannibal Lecter have at least one thing in common: Their cinematic adventures were chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

"The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), a harrowing psychological thriller about the cannibalistic serial killer Lecter, and "Forrest Gump" (1994), starring Tom Hanks as the guileless hero who thinks "life is like a box of chocolates," were critical and commercial successes that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The animated Disney classic "Bambi" is among the most beloved movies ever made.

A majority of the 25 titles chosen this year for inclusion in the National Film Registry are lesser-known ? including silent films, documentaries, avant-garde cinema and even home movies. The Library of Congress announced the selections Tuesday.

The registry began in 1989 under an act of Congress and now includes 575 films. Its aim is not to identify the best movies ever made but to preserve films with artistic, cultural or historical significance. Previous titles chosen range from "The Birth of a Nation" to "National Lampoon's Animal House."

"Forrest Gump" has its critical detractors but was praised for its technical achievements, including the seamless incorporation of the title character into historical footage.

More than 2,200 films were nominated for the registry this year. The National Film Preservation Board pares them down before Librarian of Congress James H. Billington makes the final selections.

"Each year, we do try to pick one of the titles that the public nominated the most, and `Forrest Gump' was way up there on that list," said Stephen Leggett, program coordinator for the National Film Preservation Board. "Everything on the list is subject to dissenting opinion."

Staffers at the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper, Va., work to ensure that each title is preserved for future generations, packing away original negatives or unreleased prints into the facility's massive vault and collaborating with other preservationists, movie studios and independent filmmakers.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," Billington said in a statement. "Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

Leggett said he was pleased by the inclusion of "The Negro Soldier," a 1944 documentary produced by Frank Capra that was groundbreaking for its realistic and positive depiction of African-Americans. It became mandatory viewing for soldiers entering the army in the latter stages of the war and was shown in commercial theaters.

"It was kind of ironic because the official Army policy at the time was still segregation. You had a film which was implicitly if not explicitly promoting integration," he said.

Films must be at least 10 years old to be considered for the registry.

The oldest movies selected this year are both from 1912. "The Cry of the Children" is about the pre-World War I child labor reform movement, and "A Cure for Pokeritis" stars John Bunny, regarded as the American film industry's earliest comic superstar.

"A lot of people would argue that the humor is kind of dated," Leggett said of Bunny's films ? mostly short domestic comedies in which he played a henpecked husband. "He really was a major figure at the time. It doesn't help your reputation when people like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton come after you."

Chaplin's first feature, "The Kid" (1921), was also chosen for the registry.

It was a big year for actress Sally Field, who co-starred in "Forrest Gump." "Norma Rae" (1979), featuring her Oscar-winning performance as a single mother who fought to unionize a Southern textile mill, also made this year's list.

Among the other titles chosen: "The Big Heat," a 1953 film noir starring Glenn Ford; "The Lost Weekend," Billy Wilder's Oscar-winning alcoholism drama; "Porgy and Bess," starring Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge; "Stand and Deliver," starring Edward James Olmos as an inspiring East Los Angeles math teacher; and John Ford's epic 1924 Western "The Iron Horse."

Among the lesser-known titles chosen this year, "A Computer Animated Hand" (1972) by Pixar Animation Studios co-founder Ed Catmull was one of the earliest examples of 3D computer-generated imagery. The one-minute film shows a hand turning, opening and closing.

Documentaries picked for the registry include "Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," which focuses on Gov. George Wallace's attempt to prevent two African-American students from enrolling in the University of Alabama and the response of President John F. Kennedy. "Growing Up Female" from 1971 was one of the first films to document the women's liberation movement.

Japan, China look to trade talks, debt buys

BEIJING | Sun Dec 25, 2011 5:27pm EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japan and China agreed to start formal talks early next year on a free trade pact that would also include South Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Sunday after talks that showed the deepening bonds between Asia's two biggest economies.

Japan also said it was looking to buy Chinese treasury debt, and the two governments agreed to enhance financial cooperation.

"On a free trade agreement among Japan, China and South Korea, we've made a substantial progress for an early start of negotiations," Noda told reporters after his meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao.

China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, said on its website (www.pbc.gov.cn) that the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral financial market cooperation and "encourage the use of the renminbi and Japanese yen in international trade transactions between the two countries."

The renminbi is another name for China's yuan currency.

The trade talks announcement builds on an agreement between the three countries last month also to seek a trilateral investment treaty and finish studies on the proposed free trade agreement by the end of December so that they could start formal negotiations on the trade pact.

"China is willing to closely coordinate with Japan to promote our two countries' monetary and financial development, and to accelerate progress of the China-Japan-Republic of Korea free-trade zone and East Asian financial cooperation," Wen told Noda at the meeting, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry's official website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

But the regional trade negotiations could also compete for attention with Washington's push for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), after Japan said last month it wants to join in the talks over the U.S. proposal.

CLOSER ECONOMIC TIES

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbors, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China and Japan are also the world's first and second-biggest holders of foreign reserves. Wen told Noda that closer economic ties were in both countries' interests.

"The deep-seated consequences of the current international financial crisis continue to spread, and the complexity and severity of global and world developments have exceeded our expectations," Wen said.

"China and Japan both have the need and conditions to join hands more closely to respond to challenges and deepen mutually beneficial strategic relations."

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.

In a statement issued after the two leaders' meeting, the Japanese government said it would seek to buy Chinese government bonds -- a tentative step toward diversification of Tokyo's large foreign exchange reserves that are believed to be mostly held in dollars.

China central bank said the two governments agreed to support Japanese businesses issuing yuan bonds in Tokyo and other markets outside of China, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation would begin a pilot scheme for issuing yuan-denominated bonds in mainland China.

The People's Bank of China also said it will support Japan in using the yuan for direct investment in China.

But Japanese officials have stressed that Japan's trust in dollar assets remains unshaken, and the scale of the planned purchase of Chinese government bonds will be small.

Wen and Noda also agreed to set up a framework to discuss maritime issues after diplomatic ties deteriorated sharply last year following Japan's arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain near disputed isles in the East China Sea.

Bilateral meetings attended by vice ministers and senior officials from relevant ministries will be held periodically to exchange views, in an effort to prevent a similar row from happening.

"On maritime matters, we have successfully set up a channel to solve problems through multi-layered dialogue," Noda told reporters.

HBT: A's to get permission to move to San Jose

Some fairly significant news to pass along on this Christmas Eve afternoon.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, ?all signs and top MLB sources? say that the Athletics will be granted permission by February to move to San Jose.

Of course, the A?s efforts to move have been stonewalled since 2009 so that a Bud Selig-appointed committee could study the matter. The Giants own the territorial rights to San Jose and have been reluctant to give them up until now.

While Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported last month that Selig planned to address the issue with the Giants within two weeks, he reported last night that the meeting has yet to take place. However, Nightengale indicates that the matter may be put up to a vote among MLB owners.

The Athletics are in the midst of their latest rebuilding effort, trading Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez for prospects over the past couple of weeks. The club has already purchased land in San Jose and co-owner Lew Wolff has indicated that a new ballpark could be open for business within 30-36 months once they are given approval by MLB.

Ancient green grocer target of fiery curse

A fiery ancient curse inscribed on two sides of a thin lead tablet was meant to afflict not a king or pharaoh, but a simple green grocer selling fruits and vegetables some 1,700 years ago in the city of Antioch, researchers find.

Written in Greek, the tablet holding the curse was dropped into a well in Antioch, then one of the Roman Empire's biggest cities in the East, today part of southeast Turkey, near the border with Syria.

The curse calls upon Iao, the Greek name for Yahweh, the god of the Old Testament, to afflict a man named Babylas who is identified as being a green grocer. The tablet lists his mother's name as Dionysia, "also known as Hesykhia," it reads. The text was translated by Alexander Hollmann of the University of Washington.

The artifact, which is now in the Princeton University Art Museum, was discovered in the 1930s by an archaeological team but had not previously been fully translated. The translation is detailed in the most recent edition of the journal Zeitschrift f?r Papyrologie und Epigraphik.

Reading a curse
"O thunder-and-lightning-hurling Iao, strike, bind, bind together Babylas the green grocer," reads the beginning of one side of the curse tablet. "As you struck the chariot of Pharaoh, so strike his (Babylas') offensiveness."

Hollmann told LiveScience that he has seen curses directed against gladiators and charioteers, among other occupations, but never a green grocer. "There are other people who are named by occupation in some of the curse tablets, but I haven't come across a green grocer before," he said.

The person giving the curse isn't named, so scientists can only speculate as to what his motives were. "There are curses that relate to love affairs," Hollmann said. However, "this one doesn't have that kind of language."

It's possible the curse was the result of a business rivalry or dealing of some sort. "It's not a bad suggestion that it could be business related or trade related," said Hollmann, adding that the person doing the cursing could have been a green grocer himself. If that's the case it would suggest that vegetable selling in the ancient world could be deeply competitive. "With any kind of tradesman they have their turf, they have their territory, they're susceptible to business rivalry.?

The name Babylas, used by a third-century Bishop of Antioch who was killed for his Christian beliefs, suggests the green grocer may have been a Christian. "There is a very important Bishop of Antioch called Babylas who was one of the early martyrs," Hollmann said.

Biblical metaphors
The use of Old Testament biblical metaphors initially suggested to Hollmann the curse-writer was Jewish. After studying other ancient magical spells that use the metaphors, he realized that this may not be the case.

"I don't think there's necessarily any connection with the Jewish community," he said. "Greek and Roman magic did incorporate Jewish texts sometimes without understanding them very well."

In addition to the use of Iao (Yahweh), and reference to the story of the Exodus, the curse tablet also mentions the story of Egypt's firstborn.

"O thunder?and-lightning-hurling Iao, as you cut down the firstborn of Egypt, cut down his (livestock?) as much as..." (The next part is lost.)

"It could simply be that this (the Old Testament) is a powerful text, and magic likes to deal with powerful texts and powerful names," Hollmann said. "That's what makes magic work or make(s) people think it works."

Shell Oil Spill Approaches Nigerian Shoreline

An oil spill near the coast of Nigeria is likely the worst to hit those waters in a decade, a government official said Thursday, as slicks from the Royal Dutch Shell PLC spill approached the country's southern shoreline.

The slick from Shell's Bonga field has affected 115 miles of ocean near Nigeria's coast, Peter Idabor, who leads the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, told The Associated Press. Idabor said the slick continued to move toward the shore Thursday night, putting at risk birds, fish and other wildlife in the area.

Shell, the major oil producer in Nigeria, said late Thursday the spill came from a "flexible export line" connecting the offshore field to a waiting tanker. The company published photographs of the spill, showing a telltale rainbow sheen in the ocean, but said it believes that about 50 percent of the leaked oil has already evaporated.

The source of the leak has been plugged and experts from Britain were coming to help with the cleanup, Idabor said. Nigerian Navy ships also had been sent into the area to help control the spill, he said.

Shell estimates the Bonga spill likely was less than 40,000 barrels, or 1.68 million gallons. That's about the same amount of oil spilled offshore in 1998 at a Mobil field. The 1998 spill saw oil slicks extended for more than 100 miles to Lagos, the country's commercial capital.

"Since the Mobil spill, this is just about the most major one," Idabor said.

Nigerian authorities hope to use oil booms and chemicals to disperse or collect the spilled oil, Idabor said. In a statement, Shell said its Nigerian subsidiary already had sent ships out to the slick to use dispersant on the oil sheen. The company also said it would use infrared equipment to trace places where the sheen is the thickest.

However, the size of the spill may be even larger. SkyTruth, a nonprofit group based in West Virginia that uses satellite imagery to detect environmental problems, estimated the oil spill might stretch across roughly 350 square miles of ocean ? three times what Nigerian authorities believe.

"The spill could be near the upper limit of what Shell has stated," John Amos, SkyTruth's founder and president, told the AP on Thursday. However, he said he needed more information to determine the spill's true scope.

Bonga sits about 75 miles off Nigeria's coast. It can produce about 200,000 barrels of oil and 150 million cubic feet of gas a day, according to Shell's Nigerian subsidiary. Production at the field, which Shell operates in partnership with Italy's Eni SpA, Exxon Mobil Corp., France's Total SA and the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., has been halted since the discovery of the spill.

Environmentalists blame Shell and other foreign oil firms for polluting the country's oil-rich Niger Delta. Some environmentalists say as much as 550 million gallons of oil poured into the delta during Shell's roughly 50 years of production in Nigeria ? a rate roughly comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. An estimated 11 million gallons was released during the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska.

Shell in recent years has said most of the spills in the delta are caused by militant attacks or thieves tapping into pipelines to steal crude oil, which ends up sold into the black market or cooked into a crude diesel or kerosene. Company statistics kept by Shell show spills have dropped as militant attacks in the region subsided, though this single spill at Bonga roughly doubles the amount of oil spilled by Shell this year.

Apparently predicting interest in the spill would grow, Shell already had taken out Internet advertising Thursday on search engines, directing those searching for the spill to their website. Jonathan French, a Shell spokesman in London, said the advertising came in the "interests of full transparency" so people can read the company's updates on the spill.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the U.S.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - One member of the legal team for accused former mob boss Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio is stepping down from the case.

Boston attorney Juliane Balliro, who signed on as one of Manocchio's defense lawyers in May, filed a "notice of withdrawal" motion with the courts on Tuesday.

"Mr. Manocchio will continue to be represented by attorneys Joseph Balliro and Edward J. Romano," Balliro wrote in the filing.

The elder Balliro ? Juliane Balliro's father ? was the sole lawyer at a detention hearing last week where Manocchio lost his second attempt to spring from the Wyatt Detention Center on bail.

Balliro is a well-known lawyer in New England. He has represented such names as Boston?s reputed former underboss, the late Gennaro Angiulo.

In 2010, Juliane Balliro represented Boston?s Peter Limone ? who at one time the Massachusetts State Police identified as the boss of the Patriarca crime family ? in an organized criminal gambling case. Limone spent 33 years in prison for the gangland slaying of Edward ?Teddy? Deegan, but was set free after evidence proved he had been wrongfully convicted.

Limone won a landmark civil suit against the federal government four years ago for the three decades he spent behind bars.

A call to Juliane Balliro's office has not yet been returned.

Swaddling baby is back in fashion: retailer (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The ancient practice of swaddling a newborn baby appears to be coming back into fashion in Britain for the first time in 50 years, according to a major retailer.

The trend of wrapping a baby in closely fitting clothing to imitate the conditions of a mother's womb has seen demand for its swaddling clothes increase by 61 percent over a year, Debenhams store said.

"We're seeing a return to traditional values," said a spokesman. "Customers who would once have dismissed practices as 'old fashioned' are now re-examining them precisely because they are old."

Records of swaddling go back as far as the Romans and ancient Greeks.

But the practice began to fall out of favour in the late 1950s with mothers being encouraged to choose loose-fitting clothes that allowed the baby to move freely, the store said.

"While modern research praising swaddling is certainly fuelling the new demand, we also believe that it may, in part, be a reaction to the recession and a desire to return to more settled times," it added.

Oracle misfires in fiscal 2Q, raising tech worries (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Oracle stumbled in its latest quarter as the business software maker struggled to close deals, a signal of possible trouble ahead for the technology sector.

The performance announced Tuesday covered a period of economic turbulence which has raised concerns that major companies and government agencies may curtail technology spending.

Oracle's results for the three months ending in November suggested the cutbacks have already started. Management reinforced that perception with a forecast calling for meager growth in the current quarter, which ends in February. The developments alarmed investors, causing Oracle Corp. shares to slide 10 percent.

In a telling sign of weakening demand, Oracle's sales of new software licenses edged up just 2 percent from the same time last year. Analysts had expected a double-digit gain in new software licenses. The company had predicted an increase of at least 6 percent and as much as 16 percent.

Wall Street focuses on this part of the business because selling new software products generates a stream of future revenue from maintenance and upgrades.

Oracle's software is a staple in companies and government agencies throughout the world. Its database products help companies store and manage information. Its line of applications automates a wide range of administrative tasks.

Part of the problem was that technology decision makers delayed signing contracts during the final few days of the quarter, according to Safra Catz, Oracle's chief financial officer. That could be an indication that companies and financially strapped government agencies are treading more carefully as Europe's debt problems threaten to hobble a still-fragile global economy.

"Clearly, this quarter was not what we thought it would be," Catz told analysts during a Tuesday conference call. She said the company is hoping some of the deals that were postponed in the last quarter will be completed within the next two months.

Oracle's weakest markets were in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Things looked even bleaker in Oracle's computer hardware division, which the company has been trying to build since buying fallen Silicon Valley star Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion last year. Oracle's hardware revenue dropped 10 percent from the same time last year

Oracle earned $2.2 billion, or 43 cents per share, in its fiscal second quarter. That was a 17 percent increase from net income of $1.9 billion, or 37 cents per share at the same time last year.

If not for certain items, Oracle said it would have earned 54 cents per share. That figure fell below the average estimate of 57 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue for the period edged up 2 percent from last year to $8.8 billion. Analysts, on average, had projected revenue of $9.2 billion.

In the current quarter, Oracle expects its adjusted earnings per share to range from 55 cents to 58 cents ? below the average analyst estimate of 59 cents per share. Revenue is expected to rise by 2 percent to 5 percent from the same time in the previous year. If Oracle hits that top end of that target, it would translate to revenue of about $9.2 billion ? below the analyst estimate of $9.4 billion, according to FactSet.

Oracle has expanded its sales force by about 1,700 people to fish for more customers during the second half of its fiscal year. About 111,000 employees worked at Oracle as of Nov. 30.

The company's shares shed $2.91 to hit $26.26 in extended trading after the second-quarter figures were released. The stock has been sagging since hitting $36.50 in May.

In an effort to bolster the stock, Oracle announced it will spend an additional $5 billion to buy back its shares. The company, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., didn't set a timetable to complete the stock purchases. Oracle spent about $1 billion buying 33 million shares in its most recent quarter.

Asuransi The Background of Insurance policy ? Arkham City

Asuransi is an Indonesian term for insurance policies. Insurance policy is defined as the equitable threat transfer of a loss, from one particular entity to one more, in trade for payment. The principal concept of insurance policies ? that of spreading chance ? has been all around as extended as human existence.

The initial approaches of transferring or distributing risk have been practiced by Chinese and Babylonian traders as long back as 3000 to 2000 a long time BC, that is about 5000 years back. Chinese merchants employed to journey with a great deal of valuable things, they travelled via land and drinking water. When they travelled throughout the island, they distributed their merchandise into a number of ships to restrict the loss because of to any single ship capsizing. Although the Babylonians produced a method which was recorded in the famous Code of Hammurabi all around 1750 BC. It was practiced by early Mediterranean sailing merchants. A merchant who desired to ship his trades would obtain a bank loan to fund his shipment. If the shipment arrived in great problem, the merchant ought to shell out back the bank loan to the financial institution with an extra sum in trade for the lenders assure to cancel the financial loan must the shipment be stolen.

In England, insurance policies was very first founded in the late seventeenth century. But before that time, there are ?pleasant societies? existed in England. Each member donated quantities of money to a standard sum that could be employed for emergencies. In the vicinity of the finish of the 17th century, Londons developing importance as a centre for trade elevated need for maritime insurance coverage. Although in the United States, In 1752, the Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance policy of Residences from Loss by Fireplace became the initial mutual fireplace insurance coverage company in The us.

Insurance policy in Indonesia began in the Dutch colonial period of time, related with the good results of the countrys businesses in the plantation sector and trade in Indonesia. To ensure its survival, then insurance policies is totally required. During Planet War II routines of insurance policies in Indonesia virtually stalled, primarily because of the closure of the insurance organizations owned by Dutch and British.

Following Globe War ended, the British business and the Dutch business resume functions in Indonesia soon after its independence. Until 1964, the insurance policy sector marketplace in Indonesia was still dominated by Foreign Businesses, particularly the Dutch and English.

About ten years later on, in 1975, Avrist forerunner commenced when Mr. Harry Diah founded PT Asuransi Jiwa Ikrar Abadi AJIA formally in November 1975. AJIA Headquarters located in a single of the qualities in Jalan Saharjo, Jakarta. AJIA opened the Group Administration Division, which provided a selection of goods and team insurance support and pension cash. In 1984, AJIA manufactured joint opportunity with American Global Assurance. Co., Ltd.. AIA and became the initial multinational joint venture life insurance business in Indonesia. In 2009, AIA Indonesia renamed PT Avrist Assurance and became an independent business, with the support of a lot more than a single million loyal buyers, an extensive network of distribution channels and reputation as one of the leaders in the Indonesian insurance policies market.

Christine O'Donnell Killed the Mitt Romney Campaign (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It's getting down to the wire in the GOP primaries to determine the Republican candidate to face off with President Barack Obama. And although there's no official word yet, Mitt Romney is all but done now too, thanks to an endorsement by Christine O'Donnell, as reported on the Los Angeles Times today.

Readers might remember Christine O'Donnell for her scary "I'm you" campaign slogan. But others among us also remember her penchant for trying too hard to fit in on Bill Maher's show in 1990 -- a clip that came back to haunt her during her run for Senate in 2010. With Christine O'Donnell endorsing Mitt Romney, American can hear the hammering of the last few coffin nails in his campaign.

One big problem he faces is the Great American rumor mill. It's been alleged that he's been using a campaign slogan of "Keep America American." While Mediate defends him against the allegations, we all know how people gossip anyway, once emotions get involved.

Another point which contributes to his demise as the GOP candidate, is perhaps he's not extreme enough for the mostly religious conservative voting base, to get the chance in the first place. In a report from MSNBC, he appeals to the general electorate easily, but it's the primary voters he's struggling to win over. Some folks just see no value in trying to be reasonable on certain topics like taxes or religion.

Herman Cain's already gone. Rick Perry has unofficially shot himself in the foot with "Stronger," even if he doesn't realize it fully yet. Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann, well, they're Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann...enough said. Jon Huntsman is somewhat interesting, but his marketing team seems to have done an all-too-weak job of getting his name out there. Ron Paul could make a difference in America's future, but that may actually be the very reason the establishment won't let him be the candidate. What a shame to see my country denied the chance to have a non-psychopath in the office.

I'm afraid this election cycle, it may very well come down to President Barack Obama against Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. And with Newt's love of power, the Republicans might see more votes for an Obama re-election than anyone anticipated. I could be wrong about who the nominee will be, but it is not Mitt Romney. Thank you Christine O'Donnell.

Complex sex life of goats could have implications for wildlife management

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

A new study of the mating habits of mountain goats reveals the vastly different strategies of males in different populations and could shed light on the unseen impacts of hunting.

A Durham University-led research team found that male chamois (a species of wild goat-antelope) adopt different strategies in different populations in order to succeed in the rut: some put a lot of energy in at a young age, while others wait until they are much older.

Researchers looking at neighbouring populations of chamois in Northern Italy found that males in one population delay their reproductive efforts until an older age when their size and experience allow them to dominate in the rut. They then put increasing effort into breeding until they die.

The study is the first to show clearly that this strategy of 'terminal investment', a pattern of higher reproductive effort in older age, is pursued by males in an animal population. The results, published in the journal PLoS One, show that reproductive strategies in animals are complex and can show surprising variation across neighbouring districts.

It's not clear why there is such variation but the way that these populations are managed through hunting could be a factor, according to the researchers. At present, 32 per cent of the hunting quota is made up of older males, even though these males make up only 23 per cent of the population.

If too many larger, older males are taken out of a population, younger males may be able to muscle in and start breeding. Years of rutting could exhaust these younger males, meaning that they are in poorer condition when they reach old age. If this reasoning is accurate, selectively hunting older males in populations such as this will have the effect of reducing the condition of older males in future.

This suggests that alternative hunting practices ? such as hunting males in proportion to their age distribution ? might be a better strategy.

Studies of bighorn sheep, a similarly hunted mountain species in America, have also suggested that selective hunting of older males can reduce genetic quality.

Researchers looked at three populations in detail and found that in neighbouring areas surprisingly different strategies prevailed; in one, the terminal investment strategy was dominant, in another, where older males were harvested at a slightly higher rate, the live fast/die younger strategy prevailed.

The group, led by Drs Stephen Willis and Philip Stephens, School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Durham University, in collaboration with ecologists at the University of Sassari, Italy, used data from 15,000 hunted male chamois, collected since 1973, to explore their breeding strategies. They looked at the amount of energy males of different ages expended during the annual rut at several sites in the Italian Alps and found unexpected variation across populations.

Co-author Dr Stephen Willis said: "It seems that chamois can have fun in their youth or enjoy their old age but they can't do both. In one valley, males left it until much later to get involved in the rut but, once involved, they showed a pattern of increasing effort, right up to the end of their lives."

The team was able to see how much energy was expended by rutting chamois by looking at how the body masses of males changed throughout the rut period. They were also able to establish the ages of shot individuals from the number of annual growth rings in their horns. The speed at which the animals lose body mass shows how much effort males put in to establishing and patrolling territories, and fighting to defend their harem.

At a site with more hunting and a 'faster' pace of life, the team found that male weight loss during the rut was high, that chamois began rutting at an earlier age and that life-expectancy was lower. By contrast, at a site with a 'slower' pace, lifespans were longer, the weight loss of males was less and males tended to increase the effort they put into reproduction as they got older.

Male chamois barely eat during the rut and use their non-rutting time for resting rather than foraging. They must put on weight prior to the rut in order to succeed and to survive the following winter months.

Co-author of the study, Tom Mason, a Durham University PhD student working on the project, said: "In most species, all males follow one or other of these strategies. It is intriguing that among chamois in different areas, males have different strategies, which might be related to resources, climate or competition."

Dr Philip Stephens added: "These patterns are consistent with two competing theories about how males should optimally allocate effort to reproduction during their lives, so you wouldn't normally expect to see them being displayed so differently by males in neighbouring populations of the same species."

Lions DT Suh says little about stomp, suspension (AP)

ALLEN PARK, Mich. ? Ndamukong Suh is back with the Detroit Lions. And he's not interested in rehashing the past.

Suh declined to answer questions Wednesday about his two-game suspension and car accident after rejoining his teammates for the first time in two-plus weeks.

"The most important thing right now is this football team and not me individually," Suh said.

The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year was forced by the NFL to sit out two games without pay for stepping on the right arm of Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith during a loss on Thanksgiving Day.

He was defiant during his postgame news conference that day and after the Lions criticized his conduct the next day, Suh followed up on his Facebook page with an apology to his teammates, organization and fans. Why he hasn't ? at least publicly ? said sorry to Dietrich-Smith was one of the questions Suh left unanswered.

Suh said he wouldn't change his game after his fourth fine from the league earlier this year. On Wednesday, he said nothing has altered that mind-set.

"I think I can pretty much stick with that, playing within the rules and continuing to play between the whistles," Suh said.

Suh was banned from Lions headquarters during his suspension. He returned to his hometown of Portland, Ore., and was in a car accident on his first weekend away from the team. Police decided not to investigate further after two women claimed they were injured during the wreck.

He wouldn't respond to questions about the crash. Suh seemed aware that unflattering things have been written and said about him, but doesn't look or sound concerned.

"It's not going to make me cry at night," he said.

Of more interest to Suh and the rest of the Lions is the team's quest to make the playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season. The team lost at New Orleans and barely beat Minnesota at home without Suh.

Detroit (8-5) plays at Oakland (7-6) this weekend in a game it needs to win to keep its favorable spot in the NFC wild-card race.

Even though Suh has been on his own since the suspension, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said he looked about the same as he did before being forced to stay out of the building.

"He's obviously healthy," Schwartz said. "And we need all the healthy players we can get, particularly for this last stretch."

Suh didn't think anything was out of the ordinary about his first workout with teammates in a while.

"Practice to me was normal," he said. "I wasn't out of breath."

He saved some breath in a calm, but terse, session with reporters following practice. Suh acknowledged needing to be accountable for his actions, but said answering every question from the media was not one of his responsibilities.

"It doesn't always involve you guys," he said. "It's been handled. You guys make your speculations and then you report what you think is right and not right."

Notes: Lions DT Nick Fairley went through at least part of Wednesday's practice while banged-up players CB Eric Wright, S Louis, CB Aaron Berry, LB Justin Durant and DE Lawrence Jackson were held out because of injuries while reporters had access. ... Starting CB Chris Houston, who has missed two games with an injured left knee, practiced and said he expects to play at Oakland. RB Kevin Smith was on the field and was optimistic about playing Sunday after missing the Vikings game.

Partial results give Congo's Kabila 14-point lead (AP)

KINSHASA, Congo ? Partial results issued by Congo's electoral commission overnight make it all but certain that President Joseph Kabila will be declared the winner, setting the stage for possible clashes between his backers and those loyal to the main opposition candidate.

Supporters of longtime opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi have vowed to take to the streets if Kabila is declared the winner.

Just before midnight Tuesday, election commission chief Daniel Ngoy Mulunda announced that the commission will require another 48 hours to issue the final provisional results. The delay, he said, is due to the fact that tally sheets from numerous provinces have still not been turned in. Helicopters have been dispatched to try to collect them in this vast largely roadless central African nation.

With 89.2 percent of precincts counted, Kabila had 8.3 million out of the 17.3 million votes, or 48 percent. Tshisekedi was trailing with 5.9 million votes, or 34 percent. The results were published Wednesday on the website of a United Nations-backed broadcaster, Radio Okapi.

Late Tuesday, members of Kabila's ruling party crowded inside Kinshasa's Grand Hotel for a festive celebration.

The threat of unrest hung over this troubled capital and international airlines canceled their flights. The U.S. Embassy ordered its staff and their families not to leave their homes until further notice. The American School of Kinshasa will be closed.

Last week's voting was marred by technical glitches, including the late delivery of ballots, some of which didn't reach polling stations until three days after the vote was supposed to take place. Even though it was clear that the election commission was not prepared for last week's ballot, the government rushed ahead with the election because the current president's five-year term expired Tuesday at midnight.

The 48-hour delay means that Kabila will be staying in office past his legal mandate. Analysts say the country could slide into a situation of unconstitutional power which could stoke tension in Congo.

"As we haven't yet been able to receive the tally sheets from all 60,000 polling stations in the country, we decided to push back the publication by 48 hours," said Matthieu Mpita, the spokesman of the National Independent Electoral Commission. "It was our objective to make the deadline," he said, "but we need all the elements."

On state television, coverage of a soccer match was interrupted so a statement from the election commission announcing the 48-hour delay could be read.

Congo is staging only its second democratic election and the process has been flawed at every step, from the late printing and delivery of ballots, to the chaotic counting centers where trucks were dumping containers filled with ballots and frequent power cuts interrupted the entry of data.

Over 3 million people registered to vote in the capital, Kinshasa, and observers say that only two of the four vote tabulation centers there had finished compiling results by Tuesday afternoon. Even at those two hubs, poll workers had misplaced results from hundreds of polling stations, said observers.

They were sorting through mountains of rice sacks containing ballots desperately trying to find them, said David Pottie of the Carter Center, the Atlanta-based observation mission established by former President Jimmy Carter.

Near the headquarters of the main opposition party, police fired tear gas and blasted water cannons to disperse supporters of 78-year-old Tshisekedi, witnesses said.

Election violence has already left at least 18 dead and more than 100 wounded, with most of the deaths caused by troops loyal to Kabila, according to Human Rights Watch.

Congo's back-to-back civil wars in the 1990s consumed the region. The country is ranked dead last on the United Nations' global survey of human development.

Although observers said they have not witnessed systematic fraud, only widespread irregularities, the impression among opposition supporters is that the vote is being manipulated in Kabila's favor.

Maoist rebels kill 11 in attacks in eastern India (AP)

PATNA, India ? Maoist rebels have killed 11 people in attacks across an eastern Indian state after their leader died in a gunbattle with security forces, police said.

The rebels blew up railway tracks at two points in Jharkhand before dawn Sunday to protest the Nov. 24 killing of Koteshwar Rao, alias Kishanji, in the neighboring state of West Bengal, police Superintendent D.V. Sharma said.

Hours earlier, they had attacked a police convoy traveling with a state lawmaker in western Jharkhand, detonating explosives and spraying gunfire that left 10 officers and a young boy dead.

Another officer was hospitalized with injuries. Former Jharkhand Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari escaped unharmed.

The rebels, inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, have been fighting for more than three decades in several Indian states to demand land and jobs for agricultural laborers and the poor.

Referred to as Naxalites, after the West Bengal village of Naxalbari where the movement began in 1967, they frequently target police and government workers.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the rebels the biggest internal threat to India's security.

Last month, security forces launched a hunt for Kishanji and other rebel leaders in the jungles of West Bengal, eventually killing the top rebel in a gunbattle and seizing large stocks of arms and ammunition.

The rebels have vowed to avenge his death.

Left-wing politicians have protested the killing as well, saying the rebel leader could have been made to surrender.

Apple fails to block Samsung tablet and smartphone sales in the U.S. (Digital Trends)

samsung-vs-apple

Apple and Samsung have been locked in a patent war for most of this year. It?s a complicated situation, and you should check out Digital Trends? full breakdown of the legal dispute if you really want to understand it, but the long and short of it is: Apple alleges that several of Samsung?s Android-based smartphones and tablets infringe on its own iPhone and iPad. The iThing-maker has been working to block sales of targeted Samsung devices since the dispute started, and it?s a bid that has now been officially derailed.

A Friday ruling from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh officially denies Apple?s request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung, Reuters reports. The U.S. is just one of the contested battlegrounds, however, with Apple scoring a victory on Friday as well, when an Australian judge extended a previously placed ban on Galaxy Tab sales for another week.

The iOS maker has more than 20 cases pending in 10 different countries, with the U.S.-based lawsuit having been filed in April. Friday?s ruling effectively blocks Apple?s request that sales of three Samsung smartphone models, plus the Galaxy Tab 10.1, be blocked. The case is far from over for either side, but Apple?s failed request is a definite setback.

Oklahoma State Wins Bedlam Game Over Oklahoma And Makes BCS Case

STILLWATER, Okla. ? A dominating performance made Oklahoma State a conference champion for the first time in decades. Now, the Cowboys want a shot at an even bigger title.

Joseph Randle ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, Richetti Jones returned a fumble for a score and No. 3 Oklahoma State throttled No. 13 Oklahoma 44-10 Saturday night to win the Big 12 championship and make its case to play for the BCS national title.

The Cowboys (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) snapped an eight-game losing streak in the Bedlam rivalry and won their first outright conference title since 1948 in the three-team Missouri Valley.

Oklahoma State's defense, badmouthed much of the season while giving up big yardage but leading the nation in takeaways, forced the Sooners into five turnovers ? four of them by quarterback Landry Jones.

Fans started chanting "L-S-U!" midway through the fourth quarter with the victory well in hand, then stormed the field and tore down the goal posts when it was over.

While the top-ranked Tigers won the SEC championship Saturday to lock up a spot in the BCS title game, No. 2 Alabama sat at home idle after finishing second in its division. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, proved itself the best team in its state and its conference. But it's up to the voters, who had the Cowboys fifth in the coaches' poll and Harris poll, to decide whether Oklahoma State will play for the highest stakes.

Coach Mike Gundy proclaimed earlier this week that he considered the Crimson Tide to be the second-best team in the nation "right now" ? maybe because that's what he thought his team needed to hear that to get fired up and prove him wrong.

"Last week, I said Alabama should be there," Gundy said on the field after the game. "There's no question Oklahoma State should be No. 2 right now. No question."

For most of the 107 years of the Bedlam rivalry, the Sooners had the better team and more on the line.

But each of the past two years, Oklahoma came in with a lower ranking and still found a way to derail a couple of the best teams in Oklahoma State history ? first dashing any hopes of a BCS at-large berth two years ago and then taking away the Cowboys' shot at the Big 12 championship last season.

With all that history on their side, the Sooners came out looking to intimidate.

After coming onto the field, players ran into the west end zone for a pregame prayer and then lingered after it was over ? right outside the gate where the Cowboys were getting ready to run out. Coaches, game officials and security officers made them get out of the way.

The Sooners couldn't back up the pregame bluster, though.

Brandon Weeden's 53-yard pass to Tracy Moore set up Jeremy Smith's 9-yard touchdown run, and the Cowboys defense ? which entered the game ranked 107th out of 120 teams in the nation ? never needed any more than that.

Brodrick Brown outfought Jaz Reynolds to pick off Landry Jones' pass in the end zone and prevent an Oklahoma score, and Alex Elkins stripped the ball from the quarterback on a sack to set up a TD for the Cowboys.

Jamie Blatnick picked up the fumble and returned it 59 yards to the 1-yard line, and Randle scored on the next play to make it 17-0. Randle added a 2-yard run after Sam Proctor's holding penalty on a kickoff return backed the Sooners up, and they went three-and-out ? punting it back to Oklahoma State on a shortened field.

Richetti Jones made it 34-3 after Landry Jones reached back to pass the ball and fumbled it onto the turf, with the OSU defender bobbling it and then finally controlling it for a 5-yard return.

The Sooners got their only points on Michael Hunnicutt's 48-yard field goal at the end of the first half and Blake Bell's 28-yard TD scamper with 2:25 left in the game.

Gundy thinks there's more to the Cowboys than the nation's second-highest scoring offense, and he wants a chance to prove it against LSU and its second-ranked defense.

"We'd love to have that challenge. I think our defense is better than what other people say," Gundy said.

It ended up as Oklahoma's most lopsided defeat since losing the 2005 Orange Bowl against Southern California, and the second-biggest margin of victory for the Pokes in the series ? behind only a 47-0 shutout in 1945.

Oklahoma State's case to play against LSU in New Orleans next month will be hurt by a double-overtime loss 15 days earlier at Iowa State, which finished its season 6-6. It'll bolstered by five wins against teams in the BCS Top 25, compared to two for Alabama.

And, of course, the Cowboys will have the momentum from not only winning a conference title but doing it in dominating fashion against a team that was ranked No. 1 earlier this season.
