Food & Drink Innovation Network ? ERLENBACHER INTRODUCES ...

October 24th, 2012

Three new mini cakes bearing the Nestl? labels Lion, After Eight and Choco Crossies will be introduced to erlenbacher this month.

The ?Magnificent Three? are treats designed to appeal alongside a coffee, to snack on during a conference break or pick up and take home.

For those who are fond of Lion, After Eight and Choco Crossies, these mini-cakes from our master bakers will be desirable.

The Lion mini cake has a muffin base, covered with caramel cream and covered in nougat cream.

A topping of chocolate wheat crispies and original Nestl? Lion Pops rounds off the cake, to make it an unmatched taste experience.

The Choco Crossies mini cake is a chocolaty nibble experience.

A muffin base on a nougat cream spread with chopped almonds and a chocolate coating, garnished with crispy original Nestl? Choco Crossies.

The After Eight mini cake comes in British style.

The chocolate muffin base is refined with peppermint oil and topped with an original Nestl? After Eight thin mint chocolate.

The mini cakes are only five centimetres in diameter, therefore taking minimal time to defrost.

erlenbacher offers flexibility when it comes to package size; twelve single portions weigh between 43 ? 45 grams each per tray and each box containing three trays.

The managing director, Bernhard Neumeister, said: ?We are combining the well-known quality of these brands with our erlenbacher.?

PST: Galaxy defender calls SJ style 'embarrassing'

Major League Soccer owners refused for years to listen to fans and media, the majority of whom didn?t support the overly combative way domestic, professional soccer at its highest level was beaten into submission. There was too much brute force and aggression, too little technical skill and tactical problem solving.

The balance was way out of whack, and yet owners (and therefore Major League Soccer?s top levels) looked the other way, preferring to aim energy and effort elsewhere. This year has brought added emphasis to solving the referee problem, but the league?s top levels, along with U.S. Soccer, still have not done enough to address the overall temperament and overly physical style.

Just last week, none other than esteemed Italian defensive giant Alessandro Nesta, now with Montreal, said too many of the league?s strikers play ?like animals.?

Well, perhaps the powers will believe their own players.

All credit to San Jose, a team that has talent, a respected coach and lots of momentum going into the 2012 playoffs ? but one that gets a lot out of Major League Soccer?s continued leniency in the way matches are officiated.

Simply put, games with San Jose go hand-in-hand with lots of collisions, off-the-ball antics and dangerously reckless play. Don?t believe me? Listen to Omar Gonzalez, the 2011 Defender of the Year and a huge piece of the Galaxy?s success over the back half of 2012:

To be honest, this game wasn?t even fun. I think those guys are a bunch of jokes, the way they play the game. It was just obnoxious. And, you know, it wasn?t even fun out there. It was terrible.?

Preach it, brother! Gonzalez and fellow Galaxy center back Tommy Meyer were the latest unlucky fellows tasked to deal with Earthquakes striker Steven Lenhart, surely the most maddening player in MLS. Gonzalez goes on ?

It all starts when the ball?s on the other side of the field, and you?re just running and all of a sudden you get blindsided. You just get checked by Lenhart or something. It?s just dumb [expletive] like that happens every time, and that?s not the way the game should be played. It?s embarrassing.?

I?ve said this before ? and it?s important. I don?t totally blame the Earthquakes. Players and coaches are paid to win games. That?s the bottom line, and they have some obligation to do whatever is in their power to accomplish that primary mission. To that end, you can make a case that San Jose is simply better than other clubs at exploiting the league?s soft spot in enforcement.

On the other hand, I do blame Lenhart. Watching him foul on pretty much every sequence is maddening. That guy is ridiculous.

Video game with biofeedback teaches children to curb their anger

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Children with serious anger problems can be helped by a simple video game that hones their ability to regulate their emotions, finds a pilot study at Boston Children's Hospital. Results were published online October 24 in the journal Adolescent Psychiatry.

Noticing that children with anger control problems are often uninterested in psychotherapy, but very eager to play video games, Jason Kahn, PhD, and Joseph Gonzalez-Heydrich, MD, at Boston Children's Hospital developed "RAGE Control" to motivate children to practice emotional control skills that they can later use in challenging life situations.

The fast-paced game involves shooting at enemy spaceships while avoiding shooting at friendly ones. As children play, a monitor on one finger tracks their heart rate and displays it on the computer screen. When heart rate goes above a certain level, players lose their ability to shoot at the enemy spaceships. To improve their game, they must learn to keep calm.

"The connections between the brain's executive control centers and emotional centers are weak in people with severe anger problems," explains Gonzalez-Heydrich, chief of Psychopharmacology at Boston Children's and senior investigator on the study. "However, to succeed at RAGE Control, players have to learn to use these centers at the same time to score points."

The study, led by first author Peter Ducharme, MSW, a clinical social worker at Boston Children's, compared two groups of 9- to 17-year-old children admitted to the hospital's Psychiatry Inpatient Service who had high levels of anger. To qualify for the study, the children had to have a normal IQ and not need a medication change during the five-day study period.

One group, with 19 children, received standard treatments for anger including cognitive-behavioral therapy, presentation of relaxation techniques and social skills training for five consecutive business days. The second group, with 18 children, got these same treatments, but spent the last 15 minutes of their psychotherapy session playing RAGE Control.

After five sessions, the video gamers were significantly better at keeping their heart rate down. They showed clinically significant decreases in anger scores on the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Child and Adolescent (STAXI-CA), and specifically on:

  • the intensity of anger at a particular time
  • the frequency of angry feelings over time
  • expression of anger towards others or objects.

The gamers also had a decrease in suppressed, internalized anger that reached marginal statistical significance. In contrast, the standard-treatment group showed no significant change from baseline on any of the above measures.

The video gamers gave their therapy experience high marks for helpfulness (5 to 6 on a scale of 7). "Kids reported feeling better control of their emotions when encountering day to day frustrations on the unit," says Ducharme. "While this was a pilot study, and we weren't able to follow the kids after they were discharged, we think the game will help them control their emotions in other environments."

More studies in progress

The investigators are now conducting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of RAGE Control in the outpatient clinic at Boston Children's that adds a cooperative component. The children team up with a parent for 10 game sessions at the clinic; if either the parent's or the child's heart rate goes up, neither of them can shoot, forcing them to help calm each other. (Click here for more information.)

The research team plans another clinical trial to test whether letting children take RAGE Control home, to play with parents and siblings, will increase its effect.

In addition, Kahn is spearheading a team effort to develop toys to enhance emotional regulation skills in children too young for RAGE Control. These toys include racing cars that stop if a child gets too excited and, for even younger children, a cooperative game where children try to help each other stack blocks (if heart rate goes up, the table becomes wobbly and the blocks topple).

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that this RP is a remake of my old one. I really liked the old one, and sadly it just kind of died... so I'm trying again. Some things have changed, but for the most part the general story line is still the same ;) I will also have new characters for this RP. Thank you!!!

Yes you and I did do an RP of my making. The Kingdom of Secrets: Demon of Grimes. Didn't last long though I don't think. I mean the chars were good, story was going smoothly, but it probably died due to the absence of one of the other players. Not you, you were attentive. I'll get working on a char ASAP. :D

EDIT: Done! :D

Meteorite delivers Martian secrets

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? A meteorite that landed in the Moroccan desert 14 months ago is providing more information about Mars, the planet where it originated.

University of Alberta researcher Chris Herd helped in the study of the Tissint meteorite, in which traces of Mars' unique atmosphere are trapped.

"Our team matched traces of gases found inside the Tissint meteorite with samples of Mars' atmosphere collected in 1976 by Viking, NASA's Mars lander mission," said Herd.

Herd explained that the meteorite started out 600 million years ago as a fairly typical volcanic rock on the surface of Mars, until it was launched off the planet by the impact of an asteroid.

"At the instant of that impact with Mars, a shock wave shot through the rock," said Herd. "Cracks and fissures within the rock were sealed instantly by the heat, trapping components of Mars' atmosphere inside, and forming black, glassy spots."

The team estimates that for a period of between 700,000 and one million years the rock floated through outer space, until July 2011 when it streaked through Earth's atmosphere to land in Morocco.

This is only the fifth time a Martian meteorite landing was witnessed. Herd says the key reason this meteorite is so important is that it was picked up just a few months after landing and was not subjected to weathering or contamination on this planet.

The rock's Martian weathering involved water, which means water was present on the surface of Mars within the past few hundred million years. But Herd says this meteorite sample does not carry any evidence that the water supported any life forms.

"Because the Martian rock was subjected to such intense heat, any water-borne microbial life forms that may have existed deep within cracks of the rock would have been destroyed," said Herd.

Curiosity, NASA's current Mars Rover mission, is moving around the red planet searching for more information on the history of Mars.

The team's study makes a return mission to Mars that will bring rocks back to Earth all the more crucial, says Herd. "Martian rocks delivered to Earth by a spacecraft would provide the best opportunity to see if life was ever clinging to the surface of Mars."

A multinational team worked on the Tissint meteorite research. Joining Herd from the U of A's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences was geochemistry technician Guangcheng Chen. John Duke, director of the U of A's SLOWPOKE Nuclear Reactor Facility, was also a co-author of the research paper published online Oct.11 in the journal Science.

Security official at US Embassy in Yemen killed - officials

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 9:35 a.m. ET: A masked gunman assassinated a Yemeni security official who worked for the U.S. Embassy in a drive-by shooting near his home in the capital Sanaa on Thursday, officials told The Associated Press.

Yemeni officials told the AP the killing bore the hallmarks of an attack by the al-Qaida offshoot in Yemen, but it was too early to determine whether the group was behind it.

The slain official was identified as Qassem Aqlani, a man in his fifties.

He was walking near his home in western Sanaa, when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire at him and fled the scene.?The embassy is located in eastern Sanaa.

A senior official at the State Department told NBC News that they were aware an embassy worker had been shot but did not provide further details.?

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving a Yemeni employee of our Embassy in Sanaa, and we are working with Yemeni authorities," the official said.?

Worked for embassy for 20 years
Aqlani had been working for the U.S. Embassy for nearly 20 years, said the officials who spoke to the AP condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Most recently, he was in charge of investigating a Sept. 12 assault on the U.S. Embassy by angry Yemeni protesters over the anti-Islam film.?

Protesters stormed the embassy and set fire to a U.S. flag before government forces dispersed them with tear gas. That attack came one day after the killings of the Americans in Benghazi.

Anti-US protests over Islam film spread in Middle East

The assassination resembles other attacks recently that have targeted Yemeni intelligence, military and security officials.

Those attacks are believed to be in retaliation for a military offensive by Yemen's U.S.-backed government against Yemen-based Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which Washington considers the most dangerous offshoot of the global terror network.

AQAP has called for attacks on U.S. embassies in a bid to exploit the anti-American sentiment that has swept the Middle East and other parts of the Muslim world in the past month over an anti-Islam film produced in the United States.

Al-Qaida's revenge? Leading Yemen general killed by suicide bomber

Initially, the film was linked to an attack on the U.S. Consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi on Sept. 11 which left four Americans dead including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. U.S. officials said later the attack was not linked to the video.

AQAP praised the killing of U.S. diplomats in Libya, describing it as "the best example" for those attacking embassies to follow.

AQAP had taken advantage of a security and political vacuum created by last year Arab Spring-inspired uprising and seized territories and cities in the south. The government-led offensive has pushed the militants out to mountainous areas from where they have been staging suicide attacks and assassinations inside cities.

Two weeks ago, a top intelligence official, Col. Abdullah al-Ashwal, was also killed in a drive-by shooting in Sanaa.

ESL Podcast Blog ? Blog Archive ? Fake Online Reviews

In the old days, if we wanted to get a recommendation for something, we would talk to our friends and acquaintances (people we know, but not well). These days, we go to the Internet. If you want to know about a business before you visit or about a product before you buy, you may look at online reviews, written opinions posted on the Internet.

Online reviews have become a huge influence in the global marketplace (world of buying and selling). Good or bad reviews, for example, can make or break (make successful or unsuccessful) a new restaurant, product, or hotel. It?s not unusual for businesses to post positive reviews about their own business, and even write unfavorable (negative) ones about their competitors (business competing for the same customers). The savvy?(knowledgeable) customer knows that this happens and ignores a certain number of glowing (very positive) or very negative reviews.

Weighing (deciding what is useful and what isn?t) online reviews has become harder, however, because writing fake (false; untrue)?online reviews has become?a business. There are now companies?that a book author (writer) or business owner can pay to get fake positive reviews. One company will give you 20 positive reviews for about $500 and 50 reviews for $1000.

Major online sellers do try to spot (find) fake reviews by doing linguistic (related to language) analysis. For example, if the same string of words (words in the same order) appear in multiple reviews, that?s a dead giveaway?(an easy way to tell). If an anonymous (without showing one?s real identity) reviewer only writes one glowing review, that may also be a fake review.

A recent National Public Radio story gave some tips on how to spot fake reviews. Some of these suggestions are fairly obvious (clear; apparent), but may be useful as a reminder.

  1. Don?t just look at the reviews on one site. Look for the same product or business on different websites.
  2. Many sites give special status to people who are longtime reviewers or who are verified (confirmed to be real). Their reviews are more trustworthy (reliable) than anonymous ones.
  3. Don?t pay as much attention to how many stars a business gets. Instead, look for specific information about a visitor?s experience.
  4. Read reviews for specific, helpful information that fake review writers or business owners might not think of, such as how late the swimming pool stays open at a hotel.
  5. Pay attention to what the majority of reviews say, rather than outliers (an opinion that is very different from the majority).

Do you read online reviews, and if so, for what types of products, services, or businesses? In your opinion, what are good tip-offs (pieces of evidence) of a fake review?
