CSN: Phils' Adams has needs shoulder surgery

Updated: 10:01 p.m.

SAN DIEGO -- Phillies reliever Mike Adams has most likely thrown his last pitch of the 2013 season.
?
?Not good,? he said after having his right shoulder examined in Los Angeles on Tuesday. ?I?ve got some tears in there -- rotator cuff and labrum.?
?
Adams said a course of remedy had not yet been established. He could have surgery or opt for a strength and rehab program that would require up to 12 weeks. Either way, he figures his season is over.
?
?This season doesn't look good ? highly unlikely,? he said. ?This year is almost probably a no.?
?
Adams, 34, signed a two-year, $12 million contract in the offseason. He had an MRI before the signing and that showed no surprises, according to Adams and the Phillies.
?
"They had to have happened not too long ago," Adams said of the tears.
?
Adams was supposed to be the guy that fixed the leaky eighth inning that plagued the Phillies last year. Even though he?s been inconsistent this season, his loss is a punch in the gut to a club that has the worst bullpen ERA in the majors at 4.68.
?
?It hurts,? GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. ?It?s a big blow to us.?
?
Adams experienced shoulder problems several weeks ago and had another MRI this past weekend. According to Adams, the MRI showed three tears -- two in the labrum and one on the rotator cuff. The tears were confirmed by surgeon Neal ElAttrache during an exam in Los Angeles on Tuesday. ElAttrache operated on Roy Halladay's shoulder last month.
?
If Adams opts for surgery, his recovery time won?t be known until doctors get a look at the damage inside his shoulder. His best chance of being ready for the start of next season might be the more conservative rehab route. That is what Phillies team doctors have recommended.
?
?We?re going to try to figure out what?s best over the next couple of days,? Adams said. ?It?s not going to heal. Maybe I can do some stuff to get the other muscles to take over and strengthen and hold everything else intact.?
?
Adams had a previous tear in his labrum. It was repaired surgically in 2008. He also had surgery last fall to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. Doctors removed the rib under his collarbone to alleviate pressure in his shoulder and improve circulation and feeling in his fingers.
?
The Phillies say they did their due diligence on Adams? health history and believed he was worth signing.
?
?The feeling for us was that, yeah, he?s a risk just like any other veteran guy who?s been around the block a lot,? Amaro said. ?There was some added risk because he was coming off a surgery, but his rehab went very well and he didn?t have any complaints or his issues with the thoracic outlet syndrome. This is the stuff that happens. You can?t do anything about it.?
?
Amaro said he had feelers out with other clubs, but the price for relievers was so high he expected to fill the hole in the bullpen in-house (see story).

Productive Skills: Resources for Independent Learning | Oxford ...

Girl with headset looking at computer monitor smilingHelen Stepanova is an English language teacher, teacher trainer and author, currently working as a Business English teacher in Latvia. In this guest post, she looks at some of the resources available for improving students? productive language skills.

Nowadays the Internet provides numerous possibilities for students to improve, polish and master their English language skills. In my lessons I introduce these options, explaining how my students can use them and inspiring them with my own personal experience.

I have divided these resources into two main groups:

1. for receptive skills, with 2 subgroups: reading and listening
2. for productive skills, with 2 subgroups: writing and speaking

In each group there are several useful resources. Choose the most appropriate ones for your class.

Receptive Skills

Productive Skills

Reading

Listening

Writing

Speaking

1.Fiction literature 1.Radio 1. Social networks 1. Social networks
2.Professional literature 2.Audio books 2. Language learning communities 2. Language learning communities
3.Bilingual parallel texts 3. Films ?3. Writing Clubs 3. British Council
4.Newspapers, magazines, online news 4.Podcasts ?4. Private journal 4. Speaking Clubs
5. Blogs 5. Conversations 5. Couchsurfing
6. Scripts 6.Music 6. International learning and volunteer programs

In this post, I?ll be looking at Productive Skills. I covered Receptive Skills in my previous post.

Writing

1. Social networks

Skype, Twitter and Facebook are examples of free resources to communicate in written English as you would orally. Write in your Skype profile that you are looking for a native speaker to improve your English. When someone contacts you, explain your needs and offer to correspond on a regular basis. You can then chat with them through Facebook chat, on Twitter, through blogs, etc. The disadvantage of this approach is that people are unlikely to correct your mistakes (unless you ask them to); however as the correspondence is very informal and friendly, the learner can relax and express himself/herself freely. Twitter messages make you formulate your thoughts very concisely, as the maximum length of the post is 140 characters. It teaches you to write the core idea. Blogging is also a good way to present your ideas to a wide audience and invite comments and corrections to your writing.

2. Language learning communities

Language learning communities, such as Lang-8, Phrase Base are specialized sites to help you polish your language skills, where native speakers from 180 countries will correct your writing for free. First you have to log in, and then write your text, publish it and wait until a native speaker (possibly even a teacher) checks it and gives a detailed explanation of any mistakes. You can write your own blog, correct posts of other participants if they are in your native language, make friends, create your own community, and expand your network.

3. Writing Clubs/Classes

These are a very popular form of mastering the language. The teacher gives you a theme for your writing and a deadline to submit your work. The goal is to write an essay, to develop writing skills and to monitor your mistakes, both grammatical and stylistic. Sometimes writing clubs can include written debates on a particular topic. When the discussion is over the teacher individually comments on mistakes, or a peer assessment is provided. Different Universities offer such courses, and there are several such classes on Coursera.

4. Private journal

This resource demands a higher level of motivation, as the student has to commit to keeping a regular journal. It can be a fictitious or simply a record of everyday events. The habit of writing regularly promotes a habit of thinking in English. There are several online journal tools, such as Life Journal. Nobody monitors your mistakes, but Life Journal?s password and encryption system keeps your information safe and private, unless you choose to share it to get feedback on your writing.

Speaking

1. Social networks and 2. Language learning communities

The same principle as with writing, with one difference ? you have to talk with your new native language friends. Speaking demonstrates any gaps in your language knowledge. Corresponding with pan-pals through social networks, ask them to have a conversation via Skype or another service. Regular real-life conversations will put what you?ve learned into practical application. The best practice will come from conversations with a native speaker, but even if he/she is not, you will learn to speak spontaneously and across a variety of different topics.

3. British Council

The representative office of the British Council is in every country. The main aim of the British Council is to help to share British expertise and knowledge with over 100 countries worldwide. You can attend seminars and workshops in English, meet English-speaking partners and master your speaking skills.

4. Speaking Clubs

This is a very popular forum to improve your speaking skills. Clubs are often organized to discuss the latest news and talk about different subjects.

5. Couch Surfing

Participating in a ??Couch Surfing?? club allows you to host travellers at your house and to connect with new friends all around the world by staying at their houses while travelling. You can offer your guide services in your home town and invite the foreign visitors just for a cup of coffee, which will definitely involve and improve your speaking skills. Some examples are CouchSurfing, HomeExchange, and The Hospitality Club.

6. International learning and volunteer programs

Participation in different learning and volunteer programs, such as archaeological excavations, building projects, medical volunteering, wildlife conservation or life-long learning programs, such as Grundtvig practical learning for adults, gives you the opportunity to improve your speaking skills significantly.

Property Management Companies Offer Solutions for You

Do you own a rental property? It can be difficult to manage these properties if you lack the expertise and the time. That is why San Jose property management companies are the perfect solution for so many landlords in Santa Clara County. Of course, if you have never heard of one of these companies then you may not know what they can actually do for you. Keep reading to learn about the wide-variety of services that management companies provide for countless landlords throughout Santa Clara County.

Day-to-Day Maintenance

One of the greatest challenges that landlords face is keeping up with the day-to-day maintenance of their properties. If you are an on-site landlord this can be an easier task. However, if you are person who has a few rental properties that you rent out for extra income and work a normal day job to pay your own mortgage, then you are not readily available if something needs to be repaired right away. There are also landlords who live several miles even several states away that cannot be onsite the moment something breaks. This is what a property management company is employed to handle.

Repairs and Complaints

These are the two things that property management firms take care of on a daily basis for overworked or absent landlords. Instead of the tenant calling you about a repair they would call the management company who would then send someone out to access the damage as soon as possible. They also handle complaints that tenants might have.

Financial Management

Another positive that comes with hiring a management company is that they can take care of the finances for you. Nearly all management companies will collect the monthly rent for you. Others may even be willing to pay all the bills for you including:

The mortgage on the property The utility bills Real estate tax bills Repair bills

Not all property owners need all of these services, but for those that do want these services it can make these types of management firms invaluable. Even if you prefer to handle all of your own finances, you may want to consider letting a management company collect the rent. One, many firms offer the option to pay online. Renters who can pay online are generally happier with the convenience. Two, it takes the pressure off of you to enforce late payment penalties. The management company takes care of all of this.

Finding Tenants

Another reason to consider letting someone else manage your property is that they will handle finding new tenants for you should your current tenants be asked to leave or they leave after their lease has expired. These companies will handle all the advertising, the interviewing, the credit checks and collecting the deposits. This means no more paperwork for you.

Professional Companies Only

Of course, if you decide to go the route of hiring a San Jose property management company make sure you find one that has a great reputation. Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are not unresolved complaints and trust your instincts. If you get a bad vibe, move on. You need a company that will represent you and your properties in the most professional manner possible.

Putin warns West: do not arm Syrian rebels who 'eat human organs'

LONDON (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West against arming Syrian rebels on Sunday, saying the foes of President Bashar al-Assad ate human organs and should not be supported.

In his first public comments since a decision by President Barack Obama's administration to arm rebels trying to overthrow Assad, Putin said Russia wanted to create the conditions for settling the two-year conflict.

"I think you will not deny that one does not really need to support the people who not only kill their enemies, but open up their bodies, eat their intestines, in front of the public and cameras," Putin said at a joint news conference in London with Prime Minister David Cameron.

"Are these the people you want to support? Is it them who you want to supply with weapons?"

Israel PM: Sanctions on Iran should increase

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the international community on Sunday against easing sanctions on Iran following the election of a reformist-backed president, as the country's nuclear efforts remain firmly in the hands of Iran's extremist ruling clerics.

Netanyahu made the comments a day after the surprise victory by Hasan Rowhani in Iran's presidential election was announced. Although Rowhani is considered a relative moderate and had the backing of Iranian reformists, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is the ultimate authority on all state matters and key security policy decisions? including nuclear efforts, defense and foreign affairs ? remain solidly in the hands of the ruling clerics and their powerful protectors, the Revolutionary Guard.

Netanyahu said that the Iranian clerics disqualified candidates they disagreed with from running in the election. He said the international community must not get caught in "wishful thinking" and ease the pressure on Tehran saying "Iran will be tested by its deeds."

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian calls for Israel's destruction, its support for anti-Israel militant groups and its missile and nuclear technology.

Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, a claim that Israel and many Western countries reject.

Netanyahu said that sanctions on Iran should be increased to pressure Tehran to end its suspect nuclear program. "The more pressure increases on Iran so will the chance of ending Iran's nuclear program which remains the biggest threat to world peace," Netanyahu said.

Earlier, Yuval Steinitz, Israel's minister of intelligence and strategic affairs, made similar remarks to Army Radio. "It's good to see the Iranian people protest against the radical regime," Steinitz said of the Iranian election results. But he cautioned, "As long as we don't see a change it's better to be wary and not celebrate prematurely."

Steinitz is close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and is responsible for monitoring Iran's nuclear program.

He said he doubted that the election of the new president will soften Iran's stance in its nuclear standoff with the west. "Therefore the international community needs to work hard to tighten sanctions and present a clear ultimatum to Iran in order to maybe bring about change," Steinitz said.

Israel has said that it prefers diplomacy and sanctions to end Iran's nuclear program but has hinted that military action would be an option if other peaceful attempts fail. It has called on the international community to issue a clear ultimatum to Iran to curb its nuclear program.

Meir Litvak, head of Iranian studies at Tel Aviv university, told Army Radio that Rowhani's "smiley face to the west" might make the option of military action harder.

Rowhani's predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on multiple occasions made references to the destruction of the Jewish state.

(AP) ? Moderate cleric Hasan Rowhani was declared the winner of Iran's presidential vote on Saturday after gaining support among many reform-minded Iranians looking to claw back a bit of ground after years of crackdowns and now resets the country's political order.

The stunning surge behind Rowhani, a former nuclear negotiator, was seen by his supports as a rebuke of uncompromising policies that have left Iran increasingly isolated and under biting sanctions from the West over Tehran's nuclear program. It also demonstrated the strength of opposition sentiment even in a system that is largely organized against it.

The ruling clerics barred from the race reform candidates seen as too prominent, allowing a list of hopefuls who were mainly staunch loyalists of the supreme leader and the Islamic establishment. But the opposition settled on the 64-year-old Rowhani as the least objectionable of the bunch, making him a de facto reform candidate with backers inspired by his message of outreach rather than confrontation.

Celebrations broke out across Tehran and other cities. Thousands of Rowhani supporters took to the streets leading to his campaign headquarters in Tehran before the final results were announced despite a statement from Rowhani urging his supporters to avoid street gatherings. There were no immediate reports of unrest or attempts by security forces to rein in the crowds ? another sign of the sweeping scope of Rowhani's victory with more than three times as many votes as his nearest rival.

But the numbers don't translate directly into power in Iran's Islamic system. The ruling clerics and their protectors, the Revolutionary Guard, maintain control over all key decisions such as nuclear efforts, the military and foreign affairs.

What Rowhani's victory means, however, is that reformists and liberals will likely regain a greater voice and clout to try to shape the views of the theocracy, which cannot easily ignore the decisive outcome of Friday's election to success the combative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He was barred from seeking a third consecutive run.

Ahmadinejad congratulated Rowhani, adding "I hope ... opportunity will be provided more than before to serve and work for the establishment of justice and development of the country."

Rowhani won with 50.7 percent of the more than 36 million votes cast, the Interior Ministry reported, well ahead of Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf with about 16.5 percent. Hard-line nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili ? who said he was "100 percent" against detente with Iran's foes ? came in third with 11.3 percent followed by conservative Mohsen Rezaei with 10.6 percent.

Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said the turnout was 72.7 percent, suggesting that liberals and others abandoned a planned boycott as the election was transformed into a showdown across the Islamic Republic's political divide. Iran has more than 50 million eligible voters.

Rowhani just cleared the majority needed to seal victory and avoid a runoff. The Interior Ministry said Rowhani had 18,613,329 votes, followed by Qalibaf with 6,077,292, Jalili with 4,168,946 votes and Rezaei with 3,884,412. The other two candidates were far behind.

Rowhani, the only cleric in the race, led the influential Supreme National Security Council and was given the highly sensitive nuclear envoy role in 2003, a year after Iran's 20-year-old atomic program was revealed.

"Rowhani is not an outsider and any gains by him do not mean the system is weak or that there are serious cracks," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "The ruling system has made sure that no one on the ballot is going to shake things up."

Yet the last campaign events for Rowhani carried chants that had been bottled up for years.

Some supporters called for the release of political prisoners including opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, both candidates in 2009 disputed election and now under house arrest. "Long live reforms," some cried at Rowhani's last rally. The rally was awash in purple banners and scarves ? the campaign's signature hue in a nod to the single-color identity of Mousavi's now-crushed Green Movement.

In the end, it appeared ideology overcame the economy as a deciding factor. Many voters had indicated they could favor Qalibaf because of his reputation as a competent fiscal steward who could help stabilize Iran's sanctions-battered economy.

Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear program have shrunk vital oil sales and are leaving the country isolated from international banking systems. New U.S. measures taking effect July 1 further target Iran's currency, the rial, which has lost half its foreign exchange value in the past year, driving prices of food and consumer goods sharply higher.

"I cordially congratulate your deserving election as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran and demand the God almighty to bestow you and your future government success in serving the honorable Iranian people," Qalibaf said in a message addressed to Rowhani.

Just a week ago, Rowhani was seen as overshadowed by candidates with far deeper ties to the current power structure: Jalili and Qalibaf.

Then a moderate rival of Rowhani bowed out of the presidential race to consolidate the pro-reform camp. That opened the way for high-profile endorsements including his political mentor, former President Akbar Heshmi Rafsanjani, who won admiration from opposition forces for denouncing the postelection crackdowns in 2009. This, too, may have led to Rafsanjani's being blackballed from the ballot this year by Iran's election overseers, which allowed just eight candidates among more than 680 hopefuls.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, did not publicly endorse a successor for Ahmadinejad following their falling out over the president's attempts to challenge Khamenei's near-absolute powers.

Khamenei praised Iranians for the high turnout, calling it an "epic and enthusiastic election" and a "dazzling test."

"After weeks of speaking and hearing, it's time to work. The president-elect, until formally taking office, has a precious opportunity ... to begin without hesitation the work that presidential responsibilities require," he said in his message broadcast on state TV.

Iran's stock exchange and currency markets reacted positively to early election results that showed Rowhani ahead.

The stock exchange index rose 2 percent while the rial strengthened by 9 percent against the U.S. dollar.

Upstate NY to host annual Farm Aid benefit concert

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Singer Willie Nelson is taking his annual Farm Aid benefit concert to upstate New York with an all-day festival of music and locally grown food in September.

The event in Saratoga Springs, 28 miles north of Albany, will feature Nelson and other Farm Aid board members John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews, as well as other artists to be announced soon. Tickets go on sale to Farm Aid members June 18 and to the general public June 28, the Farm Aid organization announced on Friday.

The concert will be Sept. 21 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

At a stop in Albany on Thursday, Nelson said the Northeast is fertile ground for new farmers and sustainable agriculture. Farm Aid's mission is to keep family farmers on the land and support the movement toward healthy, locally grown food, he said.

"There's a whole lot of small family farmers in upstate New York," Nelson told reporters on his tour bus in Albany before heading south for an appearance at a country music festival at Hunter Mountain in the Catskills. "I think this is a great place to try to reach some family farmers."

Nelson said Farm Aid exists because government agricultural policies often favor large corporate-owned farms rather than small farmers. "Small family farmers really need help; the big corporate farmers are doing OK," he said.

Nelson said he wants to encourage more young farmers to get back on the land and encourage people to feed their families wholesome food from farms closer to their homes. "More and more people are asking about where their breakfast comes from, why it comes from 1,500 miles away when there's a farm next door," Nelson said. "A lot of people are thinking about what we're feeding our kids. Young people are trying to stay healthy, wondering who's watching out for our food supply."

In New York, there's a heated debate in farm country over shale gas development, which currently is under a moratorium while state officials complete an environmental and health review. Some farmers see gas leases as a solution to their financial struggles, while others oppose gas drilling for fear of accidents causing water and air pollution.

"I'm against it," Nelson said. "It's bad for the land, bad for the farmers, bad for the soil. It's just all-around a bad idea."

"If farmers could make a good enough living farming, they wouldn't feel pressured to lease their land for drilling," said Cara Fraver, an organic farmer from Easton in Washington County who spoke to reporters on Nelson's bus.

"We need to guarantee farmers a living wage for what they do," Nelson said.

Farm Aid, which has been held almost every year since 1985, provides concert-goers with a Homegrown Village that features local farmers and foods as well as educational activities related to the Good Food Movement, which promotes humane, organic, sustainable agriculture.

The organization has raised more than $43 million since 1985 to support programs that help small family farms, expand the Good Food Movement and promote locally grown food. Farm Aid has made grants of more than $2.5 million in the Northeast during the past 28 years, according to the organization.

Internet giants deny granting government 'direct access' to servers

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Major tech companies including Apple Inc, Google and Facebook Inc on Thursday said they do not provide any government agency with "direct access" to their servers, contradicting a Washington Post report that they have granted such access under a classified data collection program.
