Autism study strengthens idea that we read God's mind

People with autism appear less likely to believe in God ? a discovery that has strengthened theories that religious belief relies on being able to imagine what God is thinking, a capacity known as "mentalising".

One of the hallmarks of autism is an impaired ability to infer and respond to what other people are thinking, so the investigators wondered whether this would affect their likelihood of believing in God.

In a study of adolescents questioned on their beliefs, those with autism were almost 90 per cent less likely than non-autistic peers to express a strong belief in God.

The study ? along with three others that questioned hundreds of people about religious belief and mentalisation abilities ? also showed that men are worse than women at mentalising. This correlated with them being less likely than women to believe in God.

"We reasoned that if thinking about a personal god engages mentalising abilities, then mentalising deficits would be expected to make belief in a personal god less intuitive, and therefore less believable," says Ara Norenzayan of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and joint head of the investigation. "We found support for this in four different studies."

In each of the studies, jointly reported on 30 May, Norenzayan and his colleagues asked participants to rate their agreement, on a scale from 1 to 7, to questions about their beliefs, such as: "When I am in trouble, I find myself wanting to ask God for help".

They also asked them to complete a standard questionnaire called the Empathy Quotient, which asks respondents to rate themselves on statements such as: "I am good at predicting how someone will feel".

In all four studies, professed belief in God correlated with higher mentalising scores.

The researchers caution, however, that the findings do not prove that belief in God relies exclusively on mentalisation. "We cannot infer causality without further research," says Norenzayan, pointing out that there are many other reasons why people may or may not believe in God, whether or not they are good at mentalising. Norenzayan's own research team has shown, for example, that analytical thinkers are less likely to believe in God.

Conversely, says Norenzayan, people may adopt religion for a host of psychological and cultural reasons independent of "mind-reading" abilities.

"Several studies have recently shown a relation between mentalising and the belief in a personal god," says Uffe Schj?dt of Aarhus University in Denmark, whose own studies have shown that regions of the brain vital for mentalising are active when people pray. "Their finding that deficiencies in mentalising, as seen in people with autism, correlate with a decrease of such beliefs is hardly surprising, but it now finds support in solid empirical data."

STORM ARRIVAL TIME? Some storms will probably be moving into the Metroplex, after 1030pm. ?Around DFW at 11pm. ?Not everyone will see storms at that time but areas in Denton and Collin County will be the favored areas for storms between now 11pm.

STORMS APPROACHING NORTH TEXAS?

Below is a radar of the southern Plains.? Of note is the large complex of storms along the Kansas and Oklahoma border that has winds above 70 mph with it.? This will continue to move S and SE thru the night.? This complex of storms is what we would face in the morning hours of Thursday.

Of immediate concern are the supercell thunderstorms that our just to our North and West along the Red River.? Storms have moved into Montague County moving toward Gainesville.? This storm is moving due east.? However two supercell thunderstorms that have a history of producing tornadoes and baseball size hail are diving southeast.? These storms will impact Young, Stephens and Palo Pinto County from now until 11pm.? Below is a map showing these storms mentioned above.? These supercells storms near Seymour and Guthrie do have the potential to turn back more to the east if they lose some of their rotation.? A tightly wound up supercell will tend to move to the right of the prevailing wind.? Once it lessons its rotation it will go back to the prevailing wind which would push it eastward.

TIMING OF STORMS IN METROPLEX?

The preliminary time of arrival for storms in the metroplex looks to be between 8pm and Midnight.? This is dependent on what time they develop along the dryline.? If they are slow to develop it will be later, but if sooner than may arrive sooner.? But Late evening into the early overnight hours is when we will have the greatest threat for severe weather in North Texas.? Large hail, winds 60 mph + and even a tornado threat will be with us.? The tornado threat appears to be highest along the Red River in Oklahoma.

COLD FRONT THURSDAY MORNING?

After the storms tonight, the actual cold front will arrive between 5am and 7am in the DFW area.? More showers and storms will likely accompany the front first thing tomorrow morning.? These still could be severe with hail and high wind main threat.? Rain may linger thru the morning commute before drying out in the afternoon on Thursday.? Cooler, drier air settles in for Thursday afternoon and Friday.? Highs on Thursday will be in the 80s!? Friday morning will start with temps near 60 degrees!? That?ll feel cool.? Beginning iOS Game Development - Instructional Design Adventure

I wanted to extend my learning of iOS Development outside of what SAMS Teach Yourself iOS in 24 Hours provided me during the run of the Apps for Education course so I have begun working through Patrick Alessi's Beginning iOS Game Development.? However, I need to understand the frameworks behind iOS game development a little bit more than what was introduced in the SAMS book.? That being said today, I explored Chapter 1 and skimmed Chapter 2 (since it was an introduction to XCode and I feel I have a pretty good handle on that).? My goals for tonight and tomorrow are to work through Chapters 3 (C programming language), 4 (Objective-C programming language), and 5 (Cocoa Foundation Framework).? Each of these chapters provides a quick tutorial game to develop, which will be especially important to understand how the book sets up its walkthroughs of the code which are presented a little more indirectly than the SAMS book.? The part of the book I am particularly interested in is Part II (mostly chapters 6 and 7).? These chapters contains tutorials for the two different types of Simon Says games, which is what I would like to do for my final project.? While I probably have enough knowledge to just jump into those tutorials, I'm afraid to skip over some key concepts that I may later need to know (or at least know where to find).

Now for a summary of Chapter 1 -- this is more for me than for you, but read on if you like.
What makes a good iOS Game?

Device usage:? Think about when your user will be accessing your content.? It is typically in short bursts so your game needs to be easily and efficiently launched
Use unique features:? This is not a game console so don't expect your user to play your game like they would with a D-pad or a joy-stick.? Instead allow them to interact directly with the game itself
Make your game fun!

Easily approachable:? too many rules = too difficult
Offer players a tutorial if it is complex
Balance the game to challenge the player with easy levels that progress to harder levels
Reward the player (GameKit APIs to show leader board stats)
If you have fun during the development of the game your users will have fun playing it!

Define the features (formal document or checklist):? this is a list of key features not tiny details that is used more to gauge your progress in game development.? You can add separate subitems when needed

Drawing:? UIKit and Core Graphics

*This is your first choice in how your app will render:? 2D or 3D

2D Drawing utilizes the UIKit and Core Graphics; however, 3D Drawing uses the GLKit and OpenGL ES.? For 2D, both the UIKit and Core Graphics help you create and manipulate Bezier paths, image, bitmaps, colors, and fonts.? Core Graphics extends the UIKit giving the ability to directly work with line attributes, color spaces, pattern colors, gradients, shadings, and image masks.? On the other hand, OpenGL is a C-based graphics library that you can use to build high-performance 2D and 3D graphics.? The GLKit sits on top of this in iOS5, which promises to simplify certain aspects of 3D development.? The OpenGL library is HUGE and not covered in many books -- But note, if you build a game by using the native drawing APIs and discover that the performance is not good enough to support your game, you can migrate your drawing code to OpenGL for a performance boost.

User Interaction:? Cocoa Touch

UIButton class:? When you are only concerned about a player hitting a button use a button
Touch events:? Offer more precision such as letting a player touch down on the screen and move something with finger while pressed down
Gesture recognizers:? pre-built classes that recognize when a specific motion that are common to iOS such as pinching or swiping.? Gesture recognizers will recognize, analyze, and send a message if a gesture is used
Don't forget about other functions such as the built in accelerometer!

Core Animation

Frame-based animation:? building for real-time action games by drawing each frame individually with each frame differing (example Blocker Game)
Turn-based game:? does not require as much precision but easier to just use the Core Animation framework
Core Animation framework:? animations seen in the iOS user interface, which you use by changing the Core Animation properties on an animatable object (Chapter 8:? card game)

Core Audio (covered in Chapter 9)

Sound system services is part of the Audio Toolbox framework which plays notifications for UI events (30 second sounds or shorter)
AV Foundation Framework provides an Objective-C interface with more options and fewer limitations for playing sounds and video
Audio Toolbox Framework:? synchronize audio playback with your application
Audio Unit Framework allows your application to host audio processing plug-ins called audio units.? Pre-made audio units for mixing, equalization, format conversion and real-time input/output
You can use OpenAL Framework? to create positional based stereo sound playback which accurately position the sounds in your game in three-dimensional space

GameKit:? enables three core pieces of functionality

Peer-to-peer networking:? allows you to set up an ad hoc network between devices through either bluetooth or wireless network to enable communication
In-game voice chat:? allows player of the game to chat with each other during a game
Game Center:? Social gaming services that includes leader boards, achievements Friends lists, turn based gaming, and auto-matching to anonymous players (think Words with Friends)

Long before Chowking?s Nai Cha went mainstream, I loved milk tea. I used to make my own (cheap) version by soaking a Lipton tea bag in hot water and then adding one sachet of Nestle Cream and a pinch of sugar. I even remember the first time I had that drink, it was years ago, at Eden Nature Park, when I felt guilty about abusing the buffet privilege. (I thought drinking tea was supposed to make me feel better.)

Everytime I want a fresh cup of milk tea, I knew where to go. I?d go to Chowking. But well, I?d be lying if that statement still holds true now. Because there?s Tea Amo.

Owners Chiara and April Mesiona said that the place is inspired by K-Pop and, of course, youth. ?We wanted it to look like any youngster?s hangout, but one with good food and drinks to boot?, says Chiara at the recently concluded Bloggers? Soiree held at Tea Amo. With the plush fuchsia seats, bright-hued furniture and cute knick-knacks as decor, they?re undeniably living up to their vision.

Now that I?m done talking about the place, let?s talk about the food. Tea Amo boasts of upscale home-made treats at rock bottom prices. ?Their tea, coffee and smoothie collection may be easily customized too, according to the level of sweetness and your favorite sinker/ topping.?Their yummy cakes, pasta and other tummy-filling treats are made straight out of their kitchen. They even tell stories of how heartbreaking it is to leave the shop when they have to go somewhere! That is why Chiara and April had to take turns in staying at the shop.

What I particularly like about Tea Amo is the fact that you can truly get your money?s worth. Their huge selection of milk teas and other beverages go for a little less than a hundred bucks. They have recently added rice meals and pasta to their menu as well, and they don?t cost over P150. Lastly, since the place is very accessible, you can just take the jeepney and minutes later, you can get your desired milk tea fill.

Kudos to Tea Amo for raising the bar in the cafe arena! And cheers to more homegrown brands for our beloved city with products that make us go?Ti Amo.

Bitter primaries undercut GOP hopes in 3 states

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mutual admiration was the rule for Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson's listening session at the University of South Florida.

School provost Ralph Wilcox introduced the two-term senator as a "steadfast advocate for all Floridians." Nelson, a former astronaut, flattered the more than two dozen students present, saying they had a keen sense about people running for elected office. "You guys can usually smell out folks. You can spot a phony," he said.

Nelson collected their personal stories about the unbearable weight of student loans for a Senate speech days later on the need to keep the interest rate low. At the conclusion of the hour-plus session, he posed for photos with students.

Don't go looking for compliments and congeniality in the Republican primary to decide Nelson's election-year challenger. It's one of the meanest races in the country.

George LeMieux calls rival Connie Mack a congressional no-show, claiming that the four-term House member spends more time in California with his wife, Rep. Mary Bono Mack, than either in Florida or on Capitol Hill. A devastating web video from LeMieux portrays Mack as Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen, highlighting years-old bar fights and Mack's previous experience as an events coordinator for Hooters.

Privately, top Republicans in the state bemoan their choices and the GOP candidates' anemic fundraising.

It wasn't supposed to be like this in Florida or Pennsylvania or Michigan, three presidential battleground states. Republicans romped in all three in 2010, grabbing governorships, seizing majority control of state legislatures, and winning House and Senate seats. The three Democratic senators facing re-election in 2012 ? Nelson, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan ? were certain to face top GOP recruits and strong political headwinds.

Now, roughly five months to Election Day, the three states look like missed opportunities for the GOP.

In Pennsylvania, Republican Gov. Tom Corbett's choice to challenge Casey finished an embarrassing third in the April primary. The GOP nominee is Tom Smith, who made a fortune in the coal mining business but lacks the name recognition of Casey, the son of a popular former governor.

In Michigan, former Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who finished second in the 2010 GOP primary for governor, stumbled in January with a controversial ad in which a young Asian woman spoke in broken English about China taking U.S. jobs. He faces a challenge from Clark Durant, who has the support of top Republicans Spencer Abraham and Saul Anuzis in a likely five-man primary on Aug. 7. Abraham represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate until he was ousted by Stabenow in the 2000 election, while Anuzis is running for Republican National Committee chairman.

The GOP envisions a road to a Senate majority ? it needs a net gain of four seats to win control ? but at this stage, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Florida aren't prime real estate.

"The environment can change in pretty short order," Casey said in an interview, recalling his father's success in 1990 and President Bill Clinton's in 1992, followed by Republican wins in 1994 and 1998. "We don't know what 2012 will be. We don't know whether it will be a dramatic departure from 2010 or not."

Christopher Borick, assistant professor of political science at Muhlenberg College, describes Casey as the prohibitive favorite based on his solid approval ratings, crossover appeal with Republicans and independents and his willingness to challenge President Barack Obama on several issues, most notably the requirement ? later amended ? that religious schools and hospitals provide insurance for free birth control to their employees.

Votes in Pennsylvania for Romney and Casey "won't be uncommon," Borick said.

Casey has $5.3 million cash on hand to Smith's $2 million, though the senator said "it's always a struggle when you're running against someone who can take out a pen" and write a personal check. Stabenow, who recently completed work on a five-year farm bill as chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has close to $7 million cash on hand, while Hoekstra and Durant have about $1.5 million apiece.

In Florida, Republicans describe Nelson as one of the luckiest politicians, with support they insist is a mile wide but only an inch deep. They point to his less-than-formidable opponents in past elections, former Rep. Bill McCollum and divisive 2000 recount figure Katherine Harris, whom he beat 60-38 percent in 2006.

Mack, in the first rush of fundraising, emerged with just $1.38 million cash on hand at the end of March, according to Federal Election Commission reports. LeMieux had $1.19 million. By comparison, Nelson reported $9.54 million cash on hand to run in a state with 10 expensive media markets.

This spring, Republicans, including freshman Sen. Marco Rubio, had talked up the candidacy of Florida's chief financial officer, Jeff Atwater, but he decided against running.

LeMieux claims Mack ? great-grandson of baseball Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack and son of the former senator ? is in Washington on name recognition only.

Mack "doesn't have the competency or character to be U.S. senator. If his name were Connie Smith, he wouldn't have been elected to anything," LeMieux said in an interview. LeMieux, who served as interim senator, added, "It's hard to ask for a promotion when you're not showing up for work."

Mack has the backing of likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and is considered the front-runner in the Aug. 14 primary. He's answering LeMieux's attacks with his own assault.

Seizing on published reports last week, Mack's campaign called for a Justice Department investigation into allegations that LeMieux pressured then-Gov. Charlie Crist to appoint him to the Senate for the remaining 16 months of Republican Mel Martinez's term in 2009. The newspaper reports suggested the two had a quid pro quo, with LeMieux backing Crist's unsuccessful Senate bid in 2010.

Mack shrugs off LeMieux's criticism as "juvenile" and insists that the former senator should be ashamed.

"George LeMieux is fixated on making a joke of his own campaign. We're fine to let him do that," Mack said in an interview, arguing that he's more focused on addressing the nation's problems.

Stepping into this scorched earth race is former Rep. Dave Weldon, who launched his late bid arguing that none of the candidates, including businessman Mike McCalister, has won over conservatives.

The races are certain to tighten as the November election closes in, especially with a divided electorate, outside money in the millions, and Obama and Romney spending millions more.

"Keep your eye on Florida because it is ground zero," Nelson said in an interview, pointing out that Florida's 29 electoral votes make it the biggest prize among swing states.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently spent $2 million on an ad criticizing Nelson for his support for Obama's health care law.

"Obamacare will be a nightmare for seniors," the ad says. "Did Bill Nelson consider the consequences when he cast the deciding vote for Obamacare?"

Among several locations, the ads ran in Tallahassee and Panama City, part of the Florida Panhandle in the northwestern part of the state. The choice was intentional as state Republicans and Democrats say the folksy Nelson runs stronger in the Panhandle than most Democrats, including Obama.

Mack is already trying to undercut that support, referring to Obama and Nelson as "two lock-step liberals who are joined at the hip."

Nelson will benefit, though, from the Obama campaign's strong organization in the state, said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, a Democrat who recently was re-elected.

"They've been at it for a year already in central Florida. ... They have a very visible presence," Dyer said.

The negative equity problem for U.S. homeowners might be worse than previously thought, at least according to a new measure from Zillow ($40.27 0%).?

The online real estate data provider, in its first negative equity report, said 15.7 million, or 31.4%, of homeowners were underwater on their mortgages in the first quarter. That?s up from 31.1% three months earlier but down from 32.4% in the first quarter 2011.?

Homeowners owed $1.2 trillion more than the value of their homes in the first quarter, according to Zillow.

With roughly 10% of homeowners 90-days-plus delinquent on payments, negative equity ?remains only a paper loss? for most, said Zillow Chief Economist Stan Humphries.

?As home values slowly increase and these homeowners continue to pay down their principal, they will surface again,? Humphries said in a news release.

But Zillow?s measure is considerably higher ? and subsequently more dire ? than another report on negative equity among homeowners. A CoreLogic ($17.50 0%) study from the fourth quarter 2011, the most recent available, tabulated roughly 11 million underwater homeowners, or 23% of all mortgaged properties.

Zillow said it analyzes available outstanding mortgage debt data, including lines of credit and first and second mortgages, provided by credit agency TransUnion. CoreLogic uses its own database of mortgages, which the company says accounts for roughly 85% of?mortgages?in the U.S.

Cynthia Nowak, a Zillow spokeswoman, said the company?s survey covers an estimated 50 million out of roughly 53 million mortgaged homes.

The differing numbers of underwater homeowners might have to do with the general problems of covering such a huge market, said Bill Emmons, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.?There?s no absolute way to measure outstanding mortgage debt, he said, but the bigger difference likely comes from how each outlet measures home values.

?Even if you do come up with estimates for individual house values, it?s almost always assuming orderly market conditions,? Emmons said. ?There is no answer or no solution to assigning values to something that hasn?t sold yet.?

The real issue, Emmons said, is that the different measures haven?t changed much. Zillow?s first-quarter reading fell just one percentage point from a year earlier, while CoreLogic?s fourth-quarter numbers came in at the same level as third-quarter 2009.

This negative equity and loads of debt present problems for the economy and skittish lenders, Emmons said. But for homeowners, the bigger harm is that negative equity raises the probability that other factors, like unemployment, could lead to default.

?It?s sort of like your immune system being compromised,? Emmons said. ?You?re just more vulnerable to anything coming along.?

Even for a current borrower, negative equity makes it harder to move and to refinance their mortgage, said Fred Furlong, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

But all households, even those from states that didn?t see huge price drops, have cut back on?nonmortgage?debt on similar levels, Furlong said. It?s as if ?there has been a broader lesson? from the housing boom and bust, he said.

Zillow?s report is especially bleak for metropolitan areas in states hit hard by the housing crisis. Las Vegas led the country?s biggest cities with 71% of mortgaged homeowners underwater in the first quarter, followed by Phoenix at 55.5% and Atlanta at 55.2%.

Azarenka overcomes terrible start to win at French

PARIS (AP) ? Only 22, just recently a Grand Slam champion and ranked No. 1 for the first time, Victoria Azarenka is still learning to think like a top player.

So trailing by a set and one point from being down 5-0 in the second at the French Open on Monday, Azarenka's mind was filled with "a mix of things."

"Sometimes I felt it was not my day," she explained. "Sometimes I thought, 'Yeah, maybe I still fight, I still have a chance.' Sometimes it was like, 'You know what? Forget it. I don't want to do it.'"

And yet she did do it, listening to the most positive of those voices and beginning the climb back from a daunting deficit with a gutsy second-serve ace, of all things. Showing how far she's come from the petulance of earlier in her career, Azarenka took 12 of the last 14 games to beat Alberta Brianti of Italy 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2.

"Before, maybe I would just give up and go home. I was kind of thinking there was a flight straight to Minsk," said Azarenka, who was born in the capital of Belarus. "But I didn't want to leave too soon."

She most certainly did not want to become the only top-seeded woman to lose in the first round of the French Open since the tournament started allowing foreign entrants in 1925. But she needed every bit of fortitude to right things while overcoming a whopping 60 unforced errors, far more than her 32 winners ? a terrible ratio for anyone, let alone a player who considers herself a title contender.

"Bad days happen," Azarenka said with a shrug. "Unfortunately, today I had way more mistakes than I usually do."

The top-seeded man, Novak Djokovic, limited his miscues to when he spoke to the crowd in French after a victory Monday, never even facing a break point while beating Potito Starace of Italy 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-1.

"It wasn't that successful," Djokovic said ? referring to his on-court postmatch interview, not his play, as he began his bid to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title.

"I'm trying to take it slowly. I'm running out of words," he said. "Who knows? Maybe (in the) next two weeks, I'll learn something more."

It wouldn't be much of a surprise if he's around long enough to face 16-time major champion Roger Federer in the semifinals. They met in Paris at that stage a year ago, when Federer ended Djokovic's 43-match winning streak.

The sport's other leading man, defending champion Rafael Nadal, starts his try for a record seventh French Open title on Tuesday, facing Simone Bolelli of Italy. Day 3 also features fourth-seeded Andy Murray, 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and three-time major winner Maria Sharapova.

Williams normally leads the way for the United States at big tournaments, but now she will be trying to keep up her end of the bargain: All 10 American women who played Sunday or Monday won, giving the country its largest contingent in the second round at Roland Garros since 11 made it in 2003.

Other winners Monday included defending champion Li Na and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, who next meets seven-time major champion Venus Williams.

Federer dealt with a few blips, getting broken once in each set, including when serving for the match for the first time. But he defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 to tie Jimmy Connors' Open era record of 233 Grand Slam match wins.

"They're never easy, those first rounds, you know. Last thing you want is to go down a set or (get) in a tough situation, but I was able to stay ahead in the first set. Had bits of ups and downs on my serve," Federer said. "But overall, I'm happy I'm through. That's what I look at in the end. Sometimes you have to come through when you're not playing your very best."

Azarenka managed precisely that against Brianti, a 32-year-old whose career prize money of about $1 million pales next to the more than $4.5 million her decade-younger opponent has earned in the past five months.

But with Azarenka spraying shots this way and that, Brianti took advantage. The Italian later acknowledged being thrown off, though, by what happened when the match was hers for the taking. Already up a set and 4-0 in the second, the 105th-ranked Brianti held a break point and was one point from serving for the monumental upset.

Azarenka called that a "really miserable ... moment." Instead of folding, she fought her way into the match, starting with an ace on a second serve that brought the score to deuce. There would be another break point to save seconds later, and Azarenka did so with a drop shot.

It's the latest sign of a more mature Azarenka, one who has the skill to stay near the top of tennis for years, so long as she keeps her wits about her.

At the 2009 French Open, in the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of Azarenka's career, she was the one who let a big lead slip away against the top-seeded woman, Dinara Safina, falling apart with some double-faults and flashes of temper. After taking the first set 6-1, Azarenka lost the next two.

The next year at Roland Garros, Azarenka lost 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, then was fined $4,000 for failing to attend a news conference afterward.

During Monday's rough patch, her newest mentor, 2006 Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo, sat calmly in the player's guest seats at Court Philippe Chatrier. Almost motionless, she was watching and presumably waiting for Azarenka to take control.

When Azarenka finally ended it, only then did Mauresmo rise from her seat and punch the air and let out a yell of excitement.

"She managed to turn the match around at the last minute," Mauresmo said, "by digging deep and finding the resolve to win."
