One such student, Victoria, traveled from Argentina to study English for three months in Cambridge, Mass. this fall. But she says the fact that she obtained enough US dollars to actually get here was "a miracle."

Between cash she had set aside every month and a gift from her grandfather, she had enough money for a course at Kaplan International.?The challenge, Victoria says, came from Argentina's recent currency controls.

In an attempt to keep dollars in Argentina amid a wave of capital flight,?the country's tax office in May introduced a series of hurdles for citizens wanting to travel abroad with foreign currency. The government relies on money from the central bank and nationalized pension system to pay international lenders who typically require their payments in international currency.

The Argentine currency is the peso, and just over a decade since the country?s 2001 economic meltdown, dollars are seen as more stable and thus desirable.?The lack of confidence many Argentines have in their own currency, highlighted just last year by?increased capital flight?in the lead up to Ms. Kirchner's October reelection, put those payments at risk.?

Victoria, who asked her last name not be used for fear of having trouble exchanging pesos for dollars in the future, says she filled out a form in August to purchase the US currency and was approved for $8,000 dollars. She called it a miracle because she says many people have been turned away for seemingly no reason. Her boyfriend, for example, won?t be able to visit because his request was denied. The rest of her expenses are going on her credit card.

At the Harvard event Thursday, Kirchner spoke to an audience of 100?students, faculty, and community members on topics ranging from the global recession to human rights, and answered questions from a handful of students?? including a question on currency controls.?

Her response was in keeping with her confrontational style.?

?I think Argentines travel very well,? she said, noting the nationals she has seen in places like Las Vegas, and even here, in Cambridge.??You are Argentine. You are here. So you don?t seem to have problems with dollars,? she told the Argentine graduate school student. ?You?re lucky enough to be at Harvard. Do you really think you can talk to me about currency controls?

?As president I have to take care of these reserves,? she said.

Marcia Florencia Chiaramonte, an Argentine Spanish teacher who has been working in the Boston area since before the currency controls were implemented this past spring, says she understands why the government has introduced restrictions.

Ms. Florencia says in order to make the peso stronger, the government has to stop people from using the dollar like it?s the official currency. ?The peso is our currency,? she says. ?There is a purpose to this ? the government is not being authoritarian.?

But, she acknowledges,??people don?t like that they have to explain why they are going on a trip and why they need the money.? Florencia says Argentines have to divulge how much they earn, where they are going, how long they are traveling, and the reason for their trip. ?They feel it?s an invasion,? she adds, noting that her parents recently visited and had no trouble getting dollars.

In Argentina ?there is a culture of complaining,? Florencia says. ?So people protest. They complain?. But I think most of [the president?s] policies are good for Argentina?

Mauritius' Lux Resorts pretax hurt by financing costs

PORT LOUIS (Reuters) - Mauritius hotels group Lux Island Resorts posted a drop in pretax profit for the year ended June to 14.26 million rupees from 45.95 million a year before, reflecting higher finance costs, it said on Friday.

The luxury hotel group, which has properties in the Maldives and Reunion islands as well as on the Indian Ocean island itself, said occupancy rates rose by 1 percentage point to 72 percent.

Revenue increased to 3.71 billion rupees from 3.10 billion and earnings per share climbed to 0.24 rupees from 0.07, the company said in a statement.

"With regard to the current low season, we are experiencing negative growth, however management has contained costs and maximised efficiencies and we expect earnings ... to approximate that of last year," Lux said in a statement.

The results were issued after the market closed. Shares of the firm had closed the session unchanged at 15 rupees.

A Career In Consulting Helped Prepare Young Entrepreneur To ...

Diana Goodwin says that times are changing: Student underemployment has been on the rise for years, alongside an increasingly competitive job market. It is no surprise that new graduates today are exploring less conventional career options.

With a commerce degree from the University of Toronto, Diana was able to successfully secure prestigious consultant position at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm, after graduating in 2007.

As an ex-swim instructor, however, Diana also spent a lot of time thinking about the fact that most children weren?t getting the attention they needed in large community swimming classes and that, with today?s hectic lifestyle, parents were looking for a more convenient option to teach their kids who to swim.

Her business ? AquaMobile Swim School ? was born.?She was determined to create a swim school that provided high-quality individualized swimming lessons to students in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

At first, it was something she was doing casually while working full-time at Bain.??I was doing it on the side,? she says. ?I only had time to put in a couple hours a week to grow the business.?

Those few hours proved to be enough to convince Diana ? she decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship based on what she enjoyed most.?Diana says she has no regrets about the time she spent at Bain, though.??If I were to do it over again, I would do exactly the same path of working in consulting before I?d do my own thing. 100%.?

She asserts, ?There are still a lot of skills you can learn in a traditional corporate job, a lot of connections you can make, and it brings in the money. If you?re starting [a business] right away, you?re not going to have that money.?

From there, she entered the MBA program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois, where she made the final push to make her dreams become a reality.

?While I was at business school, I worked hard on developing a robust business plan so that I could take AquaMobile to the next level once I graduated,? she says. She received her MBA in 2011.

For most new graduates, however, A-list business schools may be out of reach.? Regardless of educational background, Diana?s biggest piece of advice for new graduates who want to pursue a career in entrepreneurship is: focus.

?Once you have an idea that you are passionate about, it?s important to focus on it and go for it,? Diana says.

?If you are being pulled in many different directions and working on developing multiple ventures, you will never be able to make one idea succeed because your attention is being split too many ways.?

Diana also emphasizes the importance of starting early, specifically, when it comes to networking.

?Go out there and start building your network. It?s really important and it?s something that people don?t necessarily do a good job of doing until they need something,? she says.??Just start getting involved in things. I?ve learned so much by getting involved in my community. You never know who can help you several years down the road.?

While Diana is a strong advocate for pursuing her passions, she is also an ardent believer in being practical and proactive. She encourages taking action whether it?s starting a business part-time or joining organizations with people who share the same vision.

?Depending on what type of venture it is, it may be something that can be done part-time while working full-time,? she says.

?I hear a lot of new grads who want to do something entrepreneurial, but they don?t have an idea. Maybe it?s getting together once a week with a group of like-minded friends where you can bounce ideas off each other. Brainstorming gets that creativity going and that?s what spurs ideas. If you sit around and wait, chances are it?s not going to come to you. Plan some time, start thinking about that idea, and work with the right people,? Diana affirms.

?Go for it.?

  • Focus. Choose one idea and go for it. Don?t get distracted along the way.
  • Start young. Build your network.
  • Start now. Start something part-time and surround yourself with like-minded people.

Scape, Brian Enos new ambient music creation app is now available on the iPad video

Music making apps for the iPad are ten-a-penny, but when it's the brainchild of a super-producer like Brian Eno, you have to take notice. Scape is the third of his collaborations with Peter Chilvers after Bloom and Trope, an app that lets you generate ambient music with Eno's own sounds on a colorful, conceptual interface. Unlike standard beats'n'loops setups, each sound is tied to a series of rules -- including the time of day -- that ensures the tunes you create never play the same way twice. It's available from iTunes for $5.99 / £3.99, and who knows, maybe in a few years time, Coldplay'll come calling for your professional expertise.

How higher education may be easing the global recession

A new OECD report on education in the world's top economies highlights the importance of higher education, which includes vocational schooling, during an economic downturn.

By Whitney Eulich,?Staff writer / September 27, 2012

The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development recently released its Education at a Glance 2012 report, which examines education in OECD and G20 countries (where the data was available). Here are the five most educated countries in the world.

The key to understanding this year?s report is the 2009 - 2010 global recession: ?No group or country ? no matter how well-educated ? is totally immune from the effects of a worldwide economic downturn,? begins the Education at a Glance 2012 report, which notes that young people have borne the largest burden. Nearly 16 percent of people between the ages of 15 and 29 in OECD countries in 2010 were neither employed nor in some kind of education or training program.

The OECD research highlights the importance of higher education, which includes vocational schooling, during an economic downturn. People with more education were found to be able to keep or change jobs more easily; unemployment rates for those with higher education remained low during the economic crisis; and the earning gap between people with higher vs. lower levels of education grew wider during the recession.

Access to higher education is not equitable for all students, however, and creating opportunities for everyone is a challenge that all countries face, notes the report. For example, young people with at least one parent who has completed a higher education degree in OECD countries have nearly double the chances of attaining higher education opportunities, the report notes.

Another barrier is that students and families have taken on an increasingly large portion of education costs in OECD countries, which the report notes can lead to situations where individuals are burdened with debt that could prevent them from pursuing further education. ?These barriers may impede countries? own goals of increasing educational attainment in their populations,? the report notes.

COUNTRIES INCLUDED IN THE STUDY:

OECD countries:
Australia; Austria; Belgium; Canada; Chile; Czech Republic; Denmark; Estonia; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Iceland; Ireland; Israel; Italy; Japan; Korea; Luxembourg; Mexico; Netherlands; New Zealand; Norway; Poland; Portugal; Slovak Republic; Slovenia; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; Turkey; United Kingdom; United States

Non-OECD G20 major economies:
Argentina; Brazil; China; India; Indonesia; Russian Federation; Saudi Arabia; South Africa

Eto'o makes himself available again for Cameroon

By EMMANUEL TUMANJONG

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:03 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2012

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) -Samuel Eto'o was ready to return to the Cameroon national team Friday after being asked by the country's government to end his boycott.

The 31-year-old striker said on his website that he had made himself available again for selection "on the request of the highest authority of the Republic" after a self-imposed exile in protest against poor organization within the squad.

Eto'o met with Cameroon's prime minister, the minister of sports and also new coach Jean Paul Akon this week to discuss his return ahead of a decisive African Cup of Nations qualifying game next month.

The meeting was held on the instruction of the country's president, Paul Biya, to ensure Cameroon's former captain and the four-time African footballer of the year was back in the team with Cameroon in danger of missing out on a second straight African Cup of Nations tournament.

"I am encouraged by my desire to serve my country with the same faith and determination as the last 15 years," the Russia-based forward wrote on his website in announcing his comeback.

Having served an eight-month suspension for his part in a players' strike last year, Eto'o refused to play in this month's 2-0 loss to Cape Verde in the final round of African Cup qualifiers as a further protest against what he called the "amateur" national federation.

The second leg against Cape Verde is at home in Yaounde on Oct. 14, with a place at next year's African championship in South Africa on the line.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was apparently convinced to return for that crucial game following the firing of Frenchman Denis Lavagne as coach after the loss in Cape Verde and the return of Akon, who led Cameroon to the Olympic title as coach in 2000. Eto'o also played on that team.

Cameroon is a four-time African Cup winner, with Eto'o part of the squad for two of those titles, in 2000 and 2002. He has played 109 times for his country and scored 53 goals.

Nancy Wilson of Heart - Interview - Exclusive Track from 'Fanatic ...

Is that a mandolin we hear in the song "Million Miles"?

There's a little mandolin, and there's a little fiddle hidden in there, but mostly it's the guitar magic of Ben Mink, our producer, who knows how to tape things. I think it's the most looped, constructed-sounding thing on the whole album - basically a lot of cool trickery.

You have 12-year-old twin boys that you've said are "going on 14." Do you take them on the road?

They come out in the summertime and ride the tour buses with us. While Ann and I go out on stage to do a sound check, or get our hair and makeup ready backstage, the boys will go see a movie or hit a museum, then come watch the show.

Join AARP Today?? Receive access to exclusive information, benefits and discounts.

Do you introduce your kids to certain music?

I play a lot of classical music around the house. When the?Beatles Rock Band?video game came along, they learned all the songs. They'd wake up the next morning singing "Nowhere Man," and I was like, "Thank you, modern technology!" Now they're discovering their own music.

I decided not to push music on them. They're both naturals at music, but I want it to be an organic outgrowth. In fact when people ask me what advice I'd give aspiring musicians, I usually say, "Turn back before it's too late!"

Has your approach to melody and harmony changed over the years?

What I learned scoring films [Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous?and?Vanilla Sky,?all written and directed by Wilson's ex-husband, Cameron Crowe] was invaluable. As a songwriter, simplicity ? what not to do, what not to play ? can be the hardest thing to achieve.

I think you have to take all the colors in the palette of your life and make one great painting while you still can. Try not to keep finishing it ? just let it be finished.

Do you discipline yourself to write every day? Or just wait for the muse to strike?

Our lives are so chaotic that it's situational for both Ann and me. We're working moms ? our business trips just happen to be rock tours ? so there's no way to approach songwriting methodically. It's really just a matter of keeping your ears (and your soul, your heart, your mind and your eyes) open for the muse. If the muse floats into your space, you stop whatever you're doing and write it down.

You and Ann have an upcoming book, "Kicking and Dreaming."

It's very exciting. Our coauthor [Charles R. Cross] interviewed us individually and together for more than a year. We also sat down with our sister Lynn and talked a lot as three sisters together. We even went into the studio and recorded the story as an audiobook. Both looking back and projecting into the future, it's been a big year for us!

Artists that broke in during the 1970s have watched their audiences gray over the years, but Heart seems to attract a younger crowd, too. Have you noticed that?

Yeah ? and it's cool that it's happening to us. Ever since Carrie Underwood sang "Alone" on?American Idol?and [the video game]?Guitar Hero?featured "Barracuda," younger and younger kids have been coming to our shows. When a song takes on a life of its own like that, it's the ultimate compliment for a songwriter: It lets you connect the dots between our generation and the next ? and maybe even the next!

(AP) ? For the older ? OK, squarer ? side of the generation gap, Andy Williams was part of the soundtrack of the 1960s and '70s, with easy-listening hits such as "Moon River," the "Love Story" theme and "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" from his beloved Christmas TV specials.

The singer known for his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," Williams once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred ? not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."

The 84-year-old entertainer, who died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with bladder cancer, outlasted many of the decade's rock stars and fellow crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He remained on the charts into the 1970s and continued to perform into his 80s.

Because of illness, Williams hadn't performed in several months at his Moon River Theatre in Branson, where hundreds of fans turned out for two shows Wednesday that organizers quickly turned into tributes that included video of Williams performing. One especially moving clip from his 1960s television show included Williams singing his trademark song, "Moon River."

Sisters Carol and Ruth Harding said they drove from suburban Denver to see the evening show, explaining they'd been Williams fans since they were teenagers. Now in their early 70s, the women, who are married to brothers, said they'd seen him perform numerous times ? including 10 trips to his Christmas show.

"It's not going to be the same without him," Ruth Harding said. "It's like losing a family member. He's been part of our family."

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records, three platinum and five Grammy Award nominations.

Williams was also the first host of the live Grammy Awards telecast and hosted the show for seven consecutive years, beginning in 1971.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

The song was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in the cherished 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," but Mancini thought "Moon River" ideal for Williams, who recorded it in "pretty much one take" and also sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards. Although "Moon River" was covered by countless artists and became a hit single for Jerry Butler, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it.

"When I hear anybody else sing it, it's all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, 'No! That's my song!'" Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir titled, fittingly, "Moon River and Me."

He had been a constant presence on television with "The Andy Williams Show," which lasted in various formats through the 1960s and into 1971. It won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering with guest stars.

It was on that show that Williams ? who launched his own career as part of an all-brother quartet ? introduced the world to another clean-cut act: the original four singing Osmond Brothers of Utah. Four decades later, the Osmonds and Williams would find themselves in close proximity again, sharing Williams' theater in Branson.

Williams did book some rock and soul acts, including the Beach Boys, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson. On one show, in 1970, Williams sang "Heaven Help Us All" with Ray Charles, Mama Cass and a then-little known Elton John, a vision to Williams in his rhinestone glasses and black cape. But Williams liked him and his breakthrough hit "Your Song" enough to record it himself.

For many families, Williams and his music were a holiday tradition. His annual Christmas specials continued long after his show ended, featuring Williams dressed in colorful sweaters singing favorites that almost always included "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," a song written for Williams that became a holiday standard.

Williams' act was, apparently, not an act. The singer's unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage.

"I guess I've never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights and gouges and knees to get where they want to be," he once said. "My trouble is, I'm not constructed temperamentally along those lines."

His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude.

In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. The Rolling Stones mocked the tragedy in "Claudine," a song so pitiless that it wasn't released until decades later. Longet, who said the slaying was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse, testified on her behalf and provided support for her and their children, Noelle, Christian and Robert.

Also in the 1970s, Williams was seen frequently in the company of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. The singer denied any romantic involvement.

He was born Howard Andrew Williams in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1927, and began performing with older brothers Dick, Bob and Don in the local Presbyterian church choir. Their father, postal worker and insurance man Jay Emerson Williams, was the choirmaster and the force behind his children's career.

When Andy was 8, his father arranged for the kids to have an audition on Des Moines radio station WHO's Iowa Barn Dance. They were initially turned down but kept returning until they were finally accepted. The show attracted attention from Chicago, Cincinnati and Hollywood. Another star at WHO was a young sportscaster named Ronald Reagan, who would later praise Williams as a "national treasure."

The brothers later worked with Kay Thompson, a singer who eventually became famous for the "Eloise" children's books. She had taken a position as vocal coach at MGM studios, working with Judy Garland, June Allyson and others. After three months of training, Thompson and the Williams Brothers broke in their show at the El Rancho Room in Las Vegas, drawing rave reviews and as much as $25,000 a week.

After five years, the three older brothers, who were starting their own families, had tired of the constant travel and left to pursue other careers.

Williams initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating food intended for his two dogs.

A two-year TV stint on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show" and a contract with Cadence Records turned things around. Williams later formed his own label, Barnaby Records, which released music by the Everly Brothers, Ray Stevens and Jimmy Buffett.

Williams was a lifelong Republican who once accused President Barack Obama of "following Marxist theory." But he acknowledged experimenting with LSD, opposed the Nixon administration's efforts in the 1970s to deport John Lennon and in 1968 was an energetic supporter of Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign.

When Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968, just after winning the California Democratic primary, Williams sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at his funeral.

"We chose that song because he used it on the campaign trail," Williams later said of Kennedy, who had been a close friend. "He had a terrible voice, but he loved to sing that song. The only way I got through singing in church that day was by saying, 'This is my job. I can't let emotion get in the way of the song.' I really concentrated on not thinking about him."

After giving up touring, he settled in Branson, with its dozens of theaters featuring live music, comedy and magic acts, and was among the first wave of national entertainers to perform there regularly.

When he arrived in 1992, the town was dominated by country music, but Williams changed that with his classy, $13 million theater in the heart of the entertainment district, where he did two shows a night, six days a week, nine months of the year. Only in recent years did he cut back to one show a night. His most popular time was Christmas.

Not everyone in Hollywood accepted his move to the Midwest. "The fact is most of my friends in LA still think I'm nuts for coming here," he told The Associated Press in 1998.

He and his second wife, the former Debbie Haas, divided their time between homes in Branson and Palm Springs, Calif., where he spent his leisure hours on the golf course when Branson's theaters were dark during the winter months following Christmas.

Retirement was not on his schedule. As he told the AP in 2001: "I'll keep going until I get to the point where I can't get out on stage."

Williams is survived by his wife and his three children.

DeMint?s Senate Conservatives Fund considers supporting Akin

Most national Republican groups have turned their back on Missouri Senate hopeful Todd Akin, but with the final deadline for the congressman to withdraw from the race about to pass, one conservative group is considering backing him.

Reuters reported that the Senate Conservatives Fund, the Jim DeMint-backed political action committee, polled supporters on whether or not the group ought to back Akin.

?I?m writing to get your opinion on whether the Senate Conservatives Fund should support Congressman Todd Akin now that he is officially the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri and is polling within single digits of his Democratic opponent,? begins the email, signed by Matt Hoskins, executive director of the fund, according to a copy obtained by The Daily Caller.

The email discusses the controversy ignited by Akin?s ?legitimate rape? comments, describing it as ?an unfortunate comment in a news interview.?

?Akin is 100% pro-life and made a mistake in how he explained and defended his position. He quickly apologized,? the email says, and goes on to explain that as a result, many outside groups withdrew their support for him, which also ?discouraged donors.?

The Fund?s interest in the race coincides with Tuesday?s final deadline for Akin to drop out of the race. Akin held a press conference several hours before the 5 p.m. deadline to reiterate that he would still be in the race come 5:01 p.m. central time.

?The Senate Conservatives Fund has remained neutral, but circumstances have changed in two important ways that require us to take another look,? Hoskins says in the email.

1. Todd Akin is now officially the Republican candidate who will face liberal incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO). The deadline has passed for Congressman Akin to remove his name from the ballot so he?s the Republican candidate and the outcome of the race could decide control of the Senate.

2. The race in Missouri appears to still be winnable. The most recent Rasmussen poll shows Todd Akin trailing McCaskill by just 6 points. Congressman Akin may still be able to win this race even after all of the attacks from the liberal media and the Republican establishment.

?Knowing that Todd Akin will face Claire McCaskill in November and the race could decide control of the Senate, should the Senate Conservatives Fund endorse Akin and help him raise the support he needs to win?? is the question put to SCF members, with a link to an online poll.

The email goes on to describe Akin as ?one of the strongest conservatives running for the U.S. Senate in the entire country,? and enumerates his views as very much in line with those professed by SCF.

?The challenge for Akin now is fundraising,? Hoskins writes. ?Party leaders in Washington have made it clear that they won?t help him regardless of how close the race is. This isn?t the first time the Republican establishment has attacked and abandoned a conservative nominee, and it probably won?t be the last. But we?ve helped candidates win races without their support before, and we can do it again if we?re willing to fight.?

?This race could determine control of the Senate, and if Akin wins one thing is for sure ? he won?t owe the establishment a thing,? the email goes on to say. ?We?ll have another true conservative in the Senate who is more interested in joining the fight than the club.?

The timing of SCF?s interest also coincides with Akin changing his position on earmarks, a major issue for SCF. During his primary, Akin defended the practice. But last week, he announced that he would support a ban.

The McCaskill campaign attacked Akin for the hypocrisy.

?It?s shocking that Todd Akin?s willing to sell his support for an earmark ban, especially after defending the practice in campaign ads just two months ago,? said McCaskill press secretary Erik Dorey. ?Akin?s decision to sell his support for an earmark ban is the kind of Washington politics that Missourians hate. After 12 years in Congress, it seems that Todd Akin?s gone Washington and this is just further proof that he?ll do anything it takes to go back.?

If SCF gets into the race, they will prove Newt Gingrich right. The former Speaker of the House and presidential candidate predicted Monday at a rally where he endorsed Akin that many conservative groups would enter the race once the deadline for Akin to withdraw had passed.

The Akin campaign did not immediately respond to request for comment.

(AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney says the attack on the American consulate in Libya was an act of terrorism and says the United States must use foreign aid to bring about lasting change in such places.

In a speech Tuesday, Romney said foreign aid cannot sustain a developing country on a permanent basis and that U.S. policies should promote work, not reliance. The former Massachusetts governor also says aid should give people dignity and change attitudes toward the West.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Barack Obama's top spokesman each have said the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Obama himself has not used that language.

Romney spoke in New York at an annual global development conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton.

Secondhand Sprucing: The Entry | Design Happens

Hello hello everyone, it?s Kate back again in Part Three of this continuing series, and this week?s focus is on sprucing up secondhand finds for the entry! The first space you encounter each day as you come through the door is your foyer, and a smart entry has a few key essentials.? When you come through the door, you need a place to set the daily mail, your keys and your phone. It?s also nice to have a place to sit and kick of your shoes!

Consider that the entry is also the last space you leave each day, so a mirror is not only decorative but a place to add lipstick at the last second, fix your hair, or straighten your tie or scarf. Mirrors can be large or small, but how fun is it to transform a tired piece found at the back of a thrift store or in the corner of a garage sale? Study these stylish transformations for inspiration for your foyer.

Secondhand Mirrors(Ebay turquoise mirror by Our Lake Life; Convex rope mirror by Meridian Road; Acid etched mirror by Vintage Revivals; Thrift store plate mirrors by CraftyNest)

A small scale bench in the entry is a natural choice for taking off shoes at day?s end. Again, like in the bedroom, paint and fabric are your best friends! Personalize an entry bench with a stylish stripe, a punch floral, or an eclectic textile.

Entry Benches(Flea market bench makeover by Eddie Ross; Floral bench by Wonderfully Domestic; Coffee table to entry bench from Style At Home; Bright entry bench via Design*Sponge)

A place to drop your keys, mail, and phone is a must in an entry. Take the opportunity to bring both style and function into your home with a revamped thrift store console or Craigslist dresser placed in your foyer. Style it up with art, lamps, or a tray to corral the mail and keys.

Consoles and Dressers(Green cabinet from Young House Love; Painted entry console from Design*Sponge; Garage sale score from Decor Chick; 70s dresser turned console from Sweet Pickins Furniture)

Entries need not be merely functional, they can be stylish too, all with pieces scored on a weekend treasure hunt or reinvented with new stain or paint. I hope you all are enjoying these inspirational finds. Next week we?ll take a peek at some very cool ideas for turning secondhand finds into chic dining room accents. Stay tuned!
