Wooga: Where the Learning Never Stops | Wooga

posted on September 5, 2012

Sitting down and rigorously scanning the pages of an old book is often ridiculed as antiquated, old fashioned ? boring, even. Once those school bags have been zipped up for the last time and the adventure of starting your first job leads to a career most people tend to think the time for study is well behind them. Well, we think the learning should never stop.

Openness and exchange are at the heart of Wooga?s very core, so every individual?s learning process does not stop with the signed contract. Actually, quite the opposite happens?because as soon as a new employee has entered the office, he or she is greeted with a wide array of educational opportunities, both inside and outside the office.

A special opportunity that stands out is Wooga?s educational budget, which allows every full-time employee to invest a respectable amount of money and two extra days off to further pursue their education. Equipped with those days and financial support, Woogas can pick the most suitable options for themselves, as there aren?t any fixed catalogues or mandatory events to attend.

So far, employees have used their budget to travel all over the world to go to conferences and attend inspiring lectures, brush up their language skills in courses or to improve their skillsets in workshops. One of this year?s highlights certainly was when a group of +25 people left Berlin behind to attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. After attending a bunch of great presentations the group came back and used that knowledge to inspire the company.

Since Wooga is a truly multicultural company, many international employees seize the opportunity to attend one of the German classes offered weekly in the office. Over several sessions, attendees learn how to handle daily life conversations in a relaxed, but striving atmosphere. Some of the earlier participants were even able to put their knowledge (and taste buds) to the test in a German cooking event featuring a tasty traditional German menu.

Another popular internal choice is Florian Mueck?s public speaking workshop. Focused on actively improving your communication and presentation skills, Florian?s training (?from fear to fun?, as he likes to say), has participants gain valuable insights in a relaxed and rewarding atmosphere.

A great learning hotspot inside the Wooga office is our beloved bookshelf. A place that accumulates and stores a lot of stimulating thoughts and ideas, always available to all Woogas. Some of the evergreens in our library, which are also handed out to new employees during their starter sessions, are: Steve Krug?s ?Don?t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach To Web Usability? and Tracy Fullerton?s ?Games Design Workshop: A Playcentric Approach To Creating Innovative Games?. (Even if you are not yet working at Wooga, both books are definitely worth checking out).

Woogas also have the opportunity to order interesting and inspiring books that they think would be good additions to the growing library ? be it graphic design-reference books or introductions to different coding languages.

After having read about gaining and sharing knowledge, it is about time to walk the talk! Follow us on Twitter to get your daily fix of all things Wooga.
