Job Description

TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

QUALIFICATIONS: As set by the State Board of Education

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB GOAL: To provide opportunities for disabled students to learn content and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women; to manage the classroom in such a way that goals and objectives support and amplify those established by IDEA, state and local board policy; to perform all duties and responsibilities in a professional manner.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Provides Instruction
A. Teaches at an appropriate instructional level.
1. Teaches from state curriculum as appropriate.
2. Teaches from IEP.
3. Assists general education teachers and administrators in understanding each child and the unique characteristics of his/her disability.
4. Collaborative teacher?plans with general education teacher.

II. Follows Due Process
A. Meets timelines.
B. Invites appropriate meeting participants.
C. Has general education and parent input in formulating IEP.
D. Maintains appropriate student records.

III. Maintains Effective Physical Setting for Instruction

IV. Maintains Appropriate Student Behavior
1. Monitors student behavior.
2. Uses IEP as basis for discipline and intervention.
3. Follows Behavior Intervention Plan.
4. Communicates discipline strategies to school administrators, teachers and school staff involved with students.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Teacher duties and responsibilities

A. Follows professional practices consistent with federal, state and local policies in working with student records, parents and colleagues.
1. Interacts professionally with students and parents.
2. Keeps student information confidential.
3. Facilitates home-school communication.
4. Facilitates IEP meetings.
5. Solicits input from IEP participants to assist in making IEP decisions.
6. Maintains appropriate documentation.
7. Follows direction of Director of Programs for Exceptional Children.
8. Works cooperatively with school administrators, support personnel, colleagues and parents.
B. Complies with school, system, state and federal regulations and policies.
1. Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled.
2. Is punctual and regular in attendance.
3. Provides adequate information, plans and materials for substitute teachers.
4. Maintains accurate, complete and appropriate records and files reports promptly.
5. Attends and participates in faculty meetings, IEP meetings, special education teacher meetings and other assigned activities according to school policy.
6. Complies with conditions as stated in contract.

C. Demonstrates professional practices in teaching.
1. Models correct use of both oral and written language.
2. Demonstrates accurate and up-to-date knowledge of content.
3. Implements designated curriculum.
4. Maintains lesson plans as required by school policy.
5. Assigns reasonable tasks and homework to students.

II. Any duties and responsibilities prescribed by local school system, Exceptional
Childrens Department and school.
