Vettori asks his top-order batsmen to perform better ? Cricket News Update

Daniel Vettori, the former New Zealand captain, has urged his top-order batsmen and Tim Southee, the right-arm fast bowler, to raise their game in the Black Caps? last Super 8 encounter against West Indies today.

The Kiwis, after a superb start to the tournament, comprehensively beating Bangladesh by 59 runs, have been quite disappointing, losing three consecutive matches against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England respectively.

However, they still have an outside chance of qualifying for the semi-finals, if Ross Taylor and company beat West Indies by a big margin.

In their previous fixture against the defending champions, England, the Black Caps lost their top-three batsmen for merely 42 runs on the board, which made things extremely tough for the middle-order batsmen. As a result, New Zealand could only manage to score 148 runs in their allotted 20 overs, which were chased down comfortably by the Poms.

The left-arm spinner expressed that no team can afford to lose so many wickets upfront in the game?s shortest format.

"The first six overs you want to dominate. Losing three of our most destructive players inside seven overs [against England] means you're playing a recovery role where Ross [Taylor], Kane [Williamson] and James [Franklin] had to rebuild the innings," said the former skipper.

On the other side of the coin, Southee has been the pick of the Kiwi bowlers in the tournament, bowling a brilliant spell against the hosts (Sri Lanka) last week, which helped his side take the game into the Super Over.

However, the right-arm seamer was disappointing against Stuart Broad and company, conceding 32 runs in just two overs without picking up a wicket.

Vettori thinks that Southee is a vital cog in the Kiwi team and he must do well, if New Zealand are to restrict a powerful West Indies batting line-up.

"Tim [Southee] is normally so reliable but his first over put us on the back foot," the seasoned campaigner added. ?He needs to come to terms with the quick turnaround between games and the fact he bowled three overs of perfect yorkers against Sri Lanka. That was an incredible effort."?
