MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Witnesses say Bahraini police injured a prominent human rights activist by shooting her in the leg with a tear gas canister.
Rights activist Yousef Al-Muhafedha said Thursday that he saw police fire the canister directly at Zainab al-Khawaja at close range shortly after a protest the previous day in the village of Buri, southwest of the capital Manama. He said they appeared to recognize her.
The injury did not appear life-threatening.
Khawaja is the daughter of jailed activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja. She couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
The government Information Affairs Authority says authorities have not received al-Khawaja's claim of injury, but that all such cases are taken very seriously.
Bahrain has experienced near daily protests for 16 months following an uprising demanding greater rights from the country's Sunni dynasty.
