Timothy Real Estate Group

When Timothy Real Estate Group was contacted to audition for the Reality TV show House Hunters International, it was a surprise and an opportunity they welcomed.??For the very first time Puerto Vallarta had an opportunity to show itself off to millions of viewers and let everyone see how beautiful it is to live here and what the Real Estate buying process can be like for foreigners.??The program follows Buyers through the adventure of choosing a new home, Buyers who want to invest in Puerto Vallarta.

Filming was completed in January so the program was able to feature some of Puerto Vallarta?s biggest stars, the whales in the bay.??Lifestyle scenes were shot throughout the town with Tequila tasting, strolling the Malecon, and some of Vallarta?s beautiful beaches used in the filming.

The first airing of the episode was in the United States on April 16th and it ran again on the 5th?of May.??The episode will not air in Canada and Mexico until later this year but this created a super opportunity to hold a fundraiser and a screening here in Mexico.

The House Hunters Charity Fundraiser event held May 28th?at Daiquiri Dicks beachfront restaurant had an Old Hollywood theme.??Becas Vallarta AC, The Navy League?s Toys for Tots, and the Asilo San Juan Diego were all chosen as beneficiaries for the screening event.???Becas has helped thousands of children over the last 50 years with scholarships and this year is helping 400 children.??The Navy League does so many wonderful things for the kids of the area and Toys for Tots is a wonderful way to help those children have fewer opportunities.??The magnificent Asilo San Juan Diego is an incredible facility that offers assisted living for some of Puerto Vallarta?s beautiful senior citizens.??It?s a place for seniors to live, offers some medical and nutritional care, and gives them a home and the care they need.

There was a surprising overflow turn out at the event and they were able to raise some much-needed funds for the charities.??100% of all proceeds went to the Becas, Toys for Tots, and Asilo San Juan Diego. ?You can see all the images from the event here.

5 Ways to Make Math Interactive and Fun | Education Closet

Jenna Lee is back again with more tips for us in how to engage students in math through unconventional methods. ?Enjoy these fast, inventive possibilities!

Many elementary school students struggle with math concepts because they have difficulty connecting the material to things that are important to them. Therefore the key to teaching basic mathematics is to engage students in activities that are meaningful and interactive. After all, the best teachers know that math help for 4th graders is most helpful if the students find it fun. Try these five fun and interactive exercises in your class:

1. Teach fractions with food. Use wooden play food cut into various numbers of pieces to introduce the concept. To whet their appetites for learning even more, bring in edible object lessons. Show students how pieces of a pumpkin pie make up the whole pie. Or, allow them to try their hand at cutting a piece of fruit into equal sections and challenge them to place the correct number of pieces onto a plate to represent a certain fraction.

2. Motivate students to memorize multiplication tables with games and speed contests. Try the perennial classroom favorite by filling in blank bingo sheets with number solutions and call out multiplication problems. Students will need to solve the problems in their heads to place their markers on their bingo cards. Or boost interest with a competition. Give students a speed test of 20 multiplication or division problems and reward the first person to complete the problem set and get it onto your desk. Keep a chart at the front of the classroom to honor those with the fastest times and encourage all your students to try to beat the fastest time.

3. Teach money concepts with a classroom store filled with healthy snacks, school supplies, stickers and other fun items. Students will love the incentive of picking out their own prizes. Draw paper money in common denominations. Enlist your class to cut out the money and then place it in a class wallet or piggy bank. Reward students who solve the daily bell ringer problem set correctly with the paper money and allow them to use the money to purchase prizes from the store. Require students to demonstrate their understanding of making the correct change in order to receive their desired prize.

4. Teach the concept of years, decades, centuries and millenniums by creating a wall-sized time line on butcher block paper. Assign each student a few historical events from both recent and ancient history to research for homework. Help students to label the time line with their event and the date. Allow students to also place their own birthdays on the time line for an added way to personalize the project.

5. Make geometric concepts interactive by using shapes in a variety of fun activities. For example, have a geometric shape show and tell day where students bring in a favorite object from home that represents a particular shape. Or, group students into teams and have them go on a shape scavenger hunt by collecting a certain number of objects for each shape on the scavenger list.

There is no reason why math should stick to the same ol? boring routines when trying to get kids to learn and love it. Instead, learn to incorporate it into everyday living situations, as well as fun games, so that kids actually get excited by math.

Grazing snails rule the waves

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Coral reefs and seashores largely look the way they do because large fish and urchins eat most of the seaweed that might otherwise cover them, but a major new study has found that the greatest impact of all comes from an unexpected quarter ? small marine snails.

The study published in the journal Ecology Letters is the largest of its kind ever undertaken into the ecological impacts of marine grazing animals: it was led by Associate Professor Alistair Poore, of the UNSW Evolution & Ecology Research Centre, who worked with an international team of 10 researchers.

It found that, on average, marine herbivores remove almost 70% of the plant material growing on the sea floor ? an effect far greater than grazing animals have on land plants.

"We found that across the globe marine herbivores profoundly reduce the abundance of marine plants, with the strongest effects in rocky seashores," says Poore.

"Icons like the Great Barrier Reef would look very different otherwise: the corals and rocks are usually free of seaweed, but that's only because animals eat all the plants as soon as they grow.

"Big animals such as fish and urchins have major impacts on reefs and kelp forests but what may surprise many people is that we found that the strongest impacts of all were snails controlling seaweeds on rocky shores."

The study team analysed results from over 600 experiments, conducted over the past 40 years across the planet, where ecologists have experimentally removed herbivores to understand their importance in structuring marine habitats.

Manipulating animals in their natural habitats is the most powerful technique to understand how ecological interactions work, they note.

"When these grazing animals are removed, the seaweeds quickly start to dominate," notes Poore. "One of the exercises we give our students to illustrate this is to visit a rocky shore at Sydney's Maroubra Beach and remove all the snails from a selected area. When we return a few weeks later, the rocks are covered in green seaweed."

Of particular interest to ecologists is the team's finding that the global data set rejects the long-standing idea that herbivores in the sea and on land have stronger impacts on plants in the tropics.

"For decades, ecologists have believed that biological interactions like predation or herbivory are more intense in the tropics compared to temperate areas," says Poore. "But we found no evidence of stronger herbivory close to the equator, nor increased herbivore impacts with increased temperature. Despite expectations, grazing on coral reefs did not have larger impacts than in several other marine habitats."

The study also found that in some ways, marine plants are winning the long evolutionary battle with their herbivores. Some groups of seaweeds and seagrasses can avoid herbivore damage with the help of chemical or physical defences or because they are poor quality food.
